She's Alive! But...
« on: 21 May 2017, 03:05:13 pm »
Hey guys been away a while but the Fazer is back on the road, thanks to everyone for your help especially Bikemad for the bottom end.

But took it out for a test ride and my speedo is miss-behaving. It was just sat at 0 for a while but then started bouncing all over the place. Are we thinking speedo sensor or perhaps broken wire chance the bouncing around?

sounds like a chaffed wire or a broken sensor

all the other clocks work fine, so do we think I'm looking at something between the speedo drive & speedo, or further back towards ECU?

Check the cable routing fella, if it's touching any part of the moving wheel it'll bounce about like Barnes Wallis at a sex pistols gig.

Usually a sign the speedo sensor cable routed wrongly past the brake caliper and edge of brake disk cutting through the cable

I'm glad my old bottom end went to a good home 😎 your speedo problem simply sounds like a chaffed wire earthing out easy to fix 🙂

Yeah man, appreciate the assist with that. The clutch is a little rattly but that's nothing to difficult to sort, especially since the clutch in my old one is good, only a few hours to switch out so I'm chuffed with it.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, plenty to check on. The weird thing is, on the way home from work just now, it seemed to start working again lol

Well, this is a weird one. The speedo only works after I've been riding for 10-15 mins. Almost like it needs to warm up. However I've had it stripped, cleaned and tested in college today (for those that done know, I'm studying motorcycle mechanics. Just lack experience) we had the pico scope on it & the sensor if FUBAR. Ordered a second hand one and I'm currently using an app on my phone and GPS holder on the bars for my speedo lol

The sensor itself rarely fails. Are you sure its the sensor and not the cable or the plastic bit in the hub?

Yeah pretty sure. The auto-electronics tutor was looking at it for me, he knows his shit & spend the day testing all the components he could. There's a lot about this bike that has gone wrong that really shouldn't, like the big end at 18K miles for example!
