I'm sure I read somewhere that the later model fazers got stainless downpipes as standard, can anyone tell me if this is right or am I imagining it?

Yes I think you are right, but my memory is saying they were black coated?

To my knowledge all 600 FZS have plain steel - maybe confusing with the FZ6 ? dont know if that came with SS headers

Yup, just checked 'em with a magnet and it sticks

If they are stainless they're very low grade stainless.

Pretty sure the later 02/03ish had stainless headers but the welds aren't so they still get holes in the collectors and joins...

My 57 plate FZ6 S2 had stainless pipes when I bought in 2009

Why are so many downpipes getting yellow / brown / ugly.
That is a good reason to panit them black

Mine aren't too bad at the moment but I'll be doing them again before too much longer. They need to come off to get to the front of the engine for painting. I don't know yet, whether to drop it out or remove the radiator etc. and just mask everything else up and clean it up and spray it in situ, very tempted to do the latter. I know masking up will be an arse but I've taken bike motors out before and that ain't exactly easy either is it.

Here you are I did this last year in sit-u here is my post

Finished it off today, 1st out for a 10mile spin to get the filler fully hardened and then some masking off and a spray with Rust-oleums stove and bbq paint. It took so long to mask off that it would of been quicker to take it off but as I have never taken it off I have no time for "unknowns" as I plan to get the MOT on Monday. (my stud nuts are good as I have had them off and copper greased)
Just need to take it for another spin tomorrow to bake on the paint
I usually use Granviles engine paint but have found that it can flake off, somewhere on this forum a member recommenced the Rust-oleum so I thought I would give it a go.

Here are my 2 little holes - first pic before a good going over with a wire wheel on a drill
Next picture after a set to with the drill
Next and still to come will be photos now I have filled with gun gum I just need some dry roads to give it a run and heat it up to full hardening

My FZS 600 is a 2002 model, but 2003 registered, that that had black plain steel headers on it from new, they holed in the bottom of the collector area after about 28K miles, but the bike was used as a much loved commuter before I bought it, so it was used in all weathers, wet and salty roads.
S/S now in place.

As my pictures show you dont need to ride it in the rain as it rots from within - almost tempted to leave a hole to let the condensation drain out !

After doing my post above I re-read Chris's post and he could very well be right as it was just the collector area that rusted on mine.
Knowing that is a bit of a piss off though, cos, I could have just got them plated up and welded with Migatronic.
Looking at Sharpie's pipe after a re-paint they look really good, would have saved me 220 quid.

I restored a GPz750 a few years ago and had the exhaust ceramic coated inside and out. It was a beautiful finish and really tough but at £200+ I'm not sure I want to put that much into the Fazer at the moment. I'm already looking at upgrading the suspension. I only bought the thing as a stop gap while I'm saving for a 650 Versys and it looks like it's becoming a long term project. Bloody bikes... I'd save a fortune if I could just give them up

Nice job on the pipes, how's the paint holding up? I was thinking of using VHT Flameproof but it's quite pricey. I think I will take them off though 'cos the longer they stay on without being removed the more difficult they're likely to be to take off when they need to be. Just a theory.

I have done them twice now - first time with Granvil cylinder black and this time with Rust-oleums stove and bbq paint and both times it has flaked but only at the collector for some reason maybe that is the hottest part.

Now then as they only rust at the collector and the rest of them are fine I wonder if I can get made in stainless steel the collector part and welded on.

Maybe I could buy very cheep a scrap stainless steel crash damaged set and just use the collector from that

Yes your link works -- not expensive ( apary from the Post ) if it works on wood burners then it should be good on the pipes - those wood burners are evil when they get going.

Its funny you should post that can as I an drinking Gunniess (sort of ) right now

Didn't seem very stainless to me...

Got set of Motad stainless pipes on now. Shame they've now shut shop.
