hi all,
I first rode a boxeye about 6 years ago when I took one out from a local dealer for an hour or so. I loved it but my wife...err...didn't. So I kept my bmw which I eventually sold back in September. I wanted something lighter and more fun with an upright riding position and a decent pillion perch without stupid power, I looked at the 2016 er6f or Versys but because of a big DIY project in the house at the moment I won't get the chance to ride much this year so it would be a heavily depreciating ornament. So I sat the other half on the back of a foxeye and while it's no armchair it's apparently much better than the earlier model. So now I've got a deposit on a 9,000 mile, 2 owner 'Deep Purplish Blue' ? (I see no purple) 2003 fzs600 which I should be picking up in a week or so. It's had more paint than I would have expected for such a low mileage bike but the bodywork is mint, it gives me a project when...if the house is finished and it'll not lose much value when...if I come to sell it for a new bike. I'll post some pics when I've got it. Apologies for the rambling intro, I'm going now.
Did not know about seating improvements for the pillion on the Foxeye over the Boxeye, thanks for the info.
There are other improvements with the Fox, the headlights being one of the most significant & fuel tank larger capacity, pre-load adjustment on the top of front fork stanchions.
I believe there are a few other mods, whether they are improvements or not is up for grabs.
Not wishing to be an ogre check that the front sprocket nut has been changed from the 9mm for the 12mm upgraded nut, this has caused a lot of problems on some, not all of the FZS 600's suffered from this I believe , but it's still a good move, cos you dont know if yours is going to suffer until it might be to late.
The Genuine Yamaha upgrade nut and washer are available on eBay for about 7 quid, I believe its well worth the effort and expense of changing it just for the peace of mind as it can sh-g the gearbox out put shaft if the nut comes off. Lots about it on FOC-U, have a read up.
It can be a real bugger to get the old one off, but, again plenty of info on here about doing it.
The official Yamaha torque setting for the new nut is 90 Nm, and they also recommend using Loctite 620 thread lock. this is expensive for what it is (£10) and the chances are that the next time you come around to needing it it will be passed its usable date, you only need a tiny drop couple of drips is plenty. If you decide to do the upgrade drop me a message with your address and I will post you my bottle (about 3 weeks old) as long as you post it back to me when you have used it, as it can also go to others who need some.
When doing it work really, really clean and make sure the threads on the gearbox output shaft are completely oil/grease free (Brake cleaner on a rag work well)
See link below for the upgraded nut and washer set.
Pic below of the new nut and washer in place done again 3 weeks ago.
