Clocks flashing when stationary at lights??
« on: 05 November 2016, 06:12:59 pm »
My mates fazer 1000 gen 1 sometimes when stationary at lights and the engine is getting hot, some of the lights start to flash, it stops when pulling away.... Any ideas before I pull it apart.
If it's broken, it's not fixed.

When you say flash do you mean brighter or dimming like low voltage , would explain why it clears when pulling off , higher revs = increased voltage , stationary /tick over = lower voltage.
I'm no lektrician but had similar on old bike and turned out the battery was toast.

I would check the output of the battery mind, to be sure :)

Battery would be the obvious one, but I was hoping someone else has had this issue and could clarify the problem...

I would do the obvious, clean all connectors, check earths etc. How can it be battery if the bike starts OK?

Earth on the lights faulty, lamp loose in holder (poor contact) or poor contacts in switch.
when in doubt go flat out

Maybe it not generating enough voltage to charge the battery and run the lights and other electrical when on tick over but as engine revs rise charging increases enough to run and charge so the battery doesn't really lose the charge or replenishes on a long run.
Could it be the regulator / rectifier ?? Can you check alternator output with multimeter ??

Funnily enough the first thing I thought of is the connector to reg/rect being corroded, then look at the clock connector to check it's tight. I can check voltages no problem. Whenever he turns up with the bike I will strip connectors and clean, then cover in dielectric grease. The ideas that have been posted are all the ones i expected them to be. It was a question that I needed to ask in case someone had this exact problem and it was something obscure. Thanks guys for all your input. :thumbup :thumbup
