Backpacs?

Can anyone recommend a decent backpac for daily commuting use? I've got this Karrimor thing thats just not up to the job anymore, it's for sandwiches, keys, phone, wallet, the occasional items of clothing etc. Oh yeah, it's got to be easy to put on over a textile jacket with the usual padding.

expensive but come in various sizes and are designed for motorcyclists.
I have the largest 35 litre one and when its full i hardly notice its there, it has a special lock system. Once you try it no other rucksack compares.

Have ya not thought about a tank bag instead?  I use a magnetic one, it's about the same size as a backpack and don't cost much.
Plus they are a lot safer in the event of an accident.

Because they are attached to your bike instead of your back?

I witnessed it in my youth when a mate came off his moped on the way out of college. As he came off the bag caught on part of a speed bump and stopped his dead (from around 20mph) the force from the straps snapped his collarbone and the bruising/welts were insane

I know that he was probably just unlucky that it caught but I prefer not to take the risk.

Similar thoughts re not taking a risk. My back protector was designed to function without a back pack - I like my back.

So why haven't they come up with straps strong enough to hold but yet snappable in the event of a snag - cannot be that hard.

And I hate top boxes mostly because I am old and mounting the bike is major PITA with a top box. Also motorway wind.

Never been a fan of back packs/rucksacks, because they used to make my back get too warm.
Have got a magnetic tank bag but never felt that comfortable when using it, it always felt cumbersome and in the way. Not that it matters now as i just put a Baglux tank cover on it so the magnets won't work.
As my bike is mainly a commuter, the top box is a necessity for me. If it was ever empty it would fit 2 crash helmets in quite comfortably, but it mainly consists of light tools, several gloves for different weathers, waterproof trousers, bike manual and a carrier bag for stuff for work. There's a few bungees chucked in there just in case the seat needs to get used for anything that doesn't quite fit inside the box, or is too heavy, i won't overload it after my Renntec sports rack snapped clean in half on me.
I had 3 metal plates made, to go inside and outside the box, and then firmly bolt it to the other plate underneath the back rack, so it's solid in position and also is positioned far back enough to give a pillion plenty of room.
Stuck a 1 inch strip of reflective tape around it so even the Mr Magoo's on the road can spot it at night time.
My bike chain stays firmly planted under my seat for obvious safety reasons.

Top box or tank bag every time for me.
When I was 17, a mate came off his bike whilst wearing a backpack. Nothing major in it but it gave him a spinal injury where it poked him just in the wrong place.

I've fitted a top box now but I used to use a cheap Poundland rucksack with a hi viz waterproof cover over it.

Have you considered a tail pack or throw over's, tail pack useful for solo use.

I was knocked off by a car with a large backpack on, had a couple of spanners in the bottom, flew over the cars boot and somehow the spanners lined themselves up perfectly with my bottom (they were ring spanners) not an experience I want to repeat
