Author Topic: HELP!!!!! Rear brake issues (Read 5660 times)

Hi all. I am putting this request for advice here so i can get as many answers as possible! I have fzs600. Yesterday i bled the rear brake because the pedal goes down too far. Now it is still doing it & i have my mot friday. Any help advice to help me get this sorted would be very much appriciated as it is my only transport & i lack funds to put it in a garage to be fixed.

Is it actually moving too far or just your Impression?

does the brake actually work properly?

The pedal is going right down even though i have adjusted as much as possible. Yeah it works just,it will lock up but i am thinking because of the amount of travel it could fail the mot.

When you press the lever down does it feel like there is no resistance, if so it might just be air in the system and needs bleeding again, patience and time is the key to successful bleeding.
If you press the lever down with your hand half a dozen times very quickly does it firm up at all?

When i press it down there is no resistance until it nearly hits the stop, I can pump it a dozen times & it doesn't firm up at all? I will have to have another go at bleeding it thursday daytime as i can't do it in the evenings (no light)

In the mean time take the reservoir cap cap off and attach some kind of weight to the lever and it will self bleed over night.

Discs & pads are in good nick & the caliper looks weathered but i did give it a good clean inc putting red grease on the pistons,which seem to move freely!!

How about the hoses?

Braided hose on the rear!

First check is if this adjustment measurement correct. See picture

If that measurement is ok, checck the brake hose for damage and then bleed the brake with the pistons pushed fully home.

The adjustment is at it's fullest length maybe 2-3 inches!!, if it was any less i would have no brake at all

There is hardly any resistance when pressed but will lock up at lowish speeds,up to 20 mph over that & it helps to slow but thats is? I would like to add that everyone's input is very much appreciated

Is you disc ok? Straight not dished

Can you push the pistons back with your thumbs or do you have to force them back with a clamp.

Disc is good, the pistons were a bit of a struggle at first but seemed ok after i cleaned them!!

isn't it supposed to help slow without locking up.
My rear doesn't lock but passes the MoT

Have you tried bleeding them with the pistons pushed fully home?

Inclined to think you have a sticking piston or pistons

I haven't done it with the pistons pushed fully home but will give it a go. I might even pop the pistons out & give them a polish.(can i polish them?) & try again??

Most likely it is the seal seats a bit corroded, no need to polish the pistons just clean them well back to their shiney surfaces. If there are corrosion marks more than 5mm back they will probably need replacing.
Remove the corrosion carefully as you don't want to make the slots bigger. I usually use very stiff plastic cut to fit the seal slots and brake cleaner or maybe brake fluid to soften the corrosion.

Dont forget there are TWO bleed nipples on the rear brake.(daresay you already know that?)

The MOT is a bit like going to the dentist, it comes around quicker than you'd like, throws up problems you're unaware of, and can end up costing an awful lot more than expected.

Oh! i'm not keen on dentist

But just to update you, I have been hanging a 5 litre canister of water off the brake lever for a couple of days & it seems to be coming back now, Thank you all for you help/advice that you have given
