Iphone help please.
« on: 27 February 2012, 09:13:55 pm »
I've sold my Iphone 3gs to a chap on ebay who says that he can't now get it to work as it shows  no network. He's on O2 and so was/am I. I went to the O2 shop to trade up to the new 4S and they sorted everything out and I left the shop with a working 4S and a working but unconnected 3GS. So, what's the score? Why can't he get it to work and pick up a network?
I've advised him to speak with O2 or to take it to any independent dealer who should be able to sort out, what I feel to be a very simple problem.

Thanks in advance for your help.

If he's using an old sim used In a different phone previously, he'll maybe need the settings to update the card.
IE I had Nokia 68 something, lost it, had replacement sim sent. Had spare lg viewty, put it in, had to phone network when inserting so they could configure sim to work with that phone.

Agree with the above comments, most providers "recommend" replacing the SIM every 2 years. I know this is Vodaphone's standard response to connection issues of this type

Iphone 4s shows the heading of an e-mail and the beginning of the text in the inbox...open the mails....nothing there other than the sending details?

O2 has an on-line form which can be fill in and they will unlock any O2 iPhone. Even if it is still on contract. All you need some of the IMEI codes etc. I also traded in for a 4S, got my old O2 3GS unlocked and sold it to a chap in Belgium, he never had any problems registering it.

This ain't going away. This guy is a pain in the ass and says he can't get any network yet O2 have told me that this phone connected to their network, twice, between the 25th and 28th of February so he's a lying bastid :uhuh  I will acknowledge that there is a reception issue with older Iphones but that's the way they are, if the signal's half decent, they're good. He won't be getting any money back from me. :deal :moon

from what i remember it does need to be unlocked to accept any other sim. the contract holder has got to do it. i did it with o2 and they were complete tossers trying anything to make me stay. they said it would take a week to unlock (never happened) so i went on the o2 site and spoke via text or summat to the online help and they had no record of me wanting it unlocked! i was foccin blazing to say the least. i told them exactly what i thought of the treatment i had received and said i was taking it further and low and behold he said give it an hour then plug into itunes and it will be unlocked. bingo! went and got a sim from tesco for a tenner for more minutes and more texts and internet and the carrier is o2!!! why cant they do it as cheap as tesco?

The unlocking procedure is slightly different on an iPhone compared to other phones.

First question: What network was it originally on?

Second question: If it has been unlocked by the network, has it been re-activated by connecting to iTunes?

Third question: Has he tried a full rest? Press and hold both the home and lock buttons until the Apple logo appears (ignore the 'slide to turn off' prompt).

HTH :)

It's all gone quiet now but I think, while paying for another item on ebay, I've inadvertently given him his money back. Been days all week while chasing my own ass during this time and not had time to look into this but will do so now.  :\
