Weather taking turn for the worse
« on: 21 November 2015, 08:03:57 pm »
We've now had snow at the top of Snakes Pass- traditionally the 1st place in England to receive snow each year, It's currently closed due to ice.
I reckon we're going to have frost then eventually ice on the ground fairly soon. Is it worth still commuting or should I grease her up and stick her under tarpaulin for the next 3 months?  :'( Either way, I suppose I'll have to fork out for a monthly rail card at some point.

Depends on your route really. I will ride mine all winter but it doesn't really get icey on the roads/motorway I use.

I will ride as much as I possibly can, but the worst part for me is my own road.
The sun doesn't really hit it until around 3pm then not long after it gets dark, so you end up with constant black ice until the temperature rises.
I just won't ride over it when it's like that, I'd be gutted if I dropped the bike in my own road.
The main roads to work are mainly clear so it's a proper nuisance.

Roads are dry and fine here in Bracknell.

Although you need to be careful when cold anyway. Yesterday the forecast for today was 8am dry no precipitation at all and -2 degrees, but the dew point was -3. So no ice formation expected right?

Wrong. This morning 8am I am riding my bike, the road is very dry and there is no ice.

However approaching blind almost 120 degree bend for some reason I have slowed down almost to a 5mph. I know the road and ride slow this bend, but not so slow usually. How lucky I have done that. Some leaking pipe or something there was nice and steady water stream dripping across the road, which actually has frozen to a nice ice ring on the bend. Which I have passed fine due to above slow down.

Am I lucky or what, all thanks go to my guardian angel which obviously is doing his job  :D

Careful out there guys...
