Sprocket nut

Hi guys, passed my test last week, now planning on doing some serious miles. I have heard about the problem with the nut on the  sprocket (the front nut?) coming loose and falling off, well that sounds bad and i dont want it in the back of my mind, before i buy a new one is it possible to check myself that it needs replacing, what do i need to look for? Any help much welcome, cheers.
