Removing Filler Cap Without Key

So, I bought a used fuel tank (FZS600) and it arrived with the filler cap fitted and no key (and with fuel in!!)


How do you open/remove the cap without a key?  I'm cautious of drilling out the lock in case of sparks, am I being soft?

Dude! I've never done this but I'd assume you just remove the whole filler cap unit by removing the seven cap screws located round the outer ring.

The screws to stop any old Tom from opening your cap are hidden underneath your currently locked cap!

look on youtube theres ways to get past most locks?

or ask locksmith on here, but he may ask for payment as its his living?

That will not work. This is from my TDM but Fazer is similar:



The part marked with the red arrow will engage under the edge of the opening when the cap is locked.
And you can see the screws Punkstig mentioned.

this is no use whatsoever but I can't stop watching it?

The only other ways are knocking a large flat bladed screwdriver in and trying to force it open with molegrips or the self taping screw and slide hammer to remove the lock barrel but I dont know if these methods still work or if the locks are stronger now?

1) A locked filler cap
2) With fuel in it
3) No key to open it

Can you contact the seller and ask him for key?

Edit....just thought that the seller might of taken the security screw out before he sent it, worth a try of removing the Alan bolts, only 3 needed to try it as other ones are for show

Is it possible the key is stuck under the tank or was in the packaging that hopefully you've not thrown out yet?

How much fuel is in it or it? you can drain the fuel out from there if needed.

Also,  if you are going to drill, hammer it with a screwdriver etc

Thanks for all of the advice.  Before posting on here I'd tried removing the 5 perimeter screws but no luck, then checked the current tank and found the security screw.


I'm going to drill it.  I do have two powder extinguishers!!

Of course this will take some time but you would be on the safe side.

It took long enough for someone to think of draining the fuel didn't it though a tank full of fumes will blow more easily I'd have thought, still it would blow any dents out

It would have to picked so no use to you there.
Being a wafer lock it will take a lot of drilling, you'll have to drill the whole plug out (all of the circular piece the key enters into) without going too deep and bang a screwdriver in there and try turning it!

I expect some savvy mechanic with more experience will come along shortly and tell us how to do it more efficiently!

because the cap will be scrap anyway.
alternatively measure the depth of a handy friends cap, put some tape on a drill bit 1" higher and drill with impunity. the seal on the cap should prevent any spark/vapour interface.
tbh, if you get sparks when you drill you're doing it wrong!!

All done.  Don't know what I was worried about.  Decent 4mm drill straight down the barrel, twist with a flat blade screwdriver, 20 seconds, easy.  Can even re-shut it

Are you sure it had the locking gubbins still in it and a screwdriver would have opened it anyway?

Yeah but I think you wouldn't have much fun or response if you'd just put a screwdriver in there and turned it before you posted here
