What to look for on an early 1000

I'm on the lookout for an early thou, is there anything out of the ordinary I should be looking out for when going to view?

exup for sure as expensive to sort if buggered rear shock is pants engines are bomb proof altough silver engine paint does tyre in its luster with age

itd one the best slrounders out there and long term ownership is well known as is the return to the bike after trying others
its a hard bike to beat

you can mod it to death i know one the main culprits

Cheers for that Devilsyam, how do you know if the EXUP valve is playing up? do they cycle run when the ignition is switched on ? God I've just checked out your website with your modded Fazers on , fair play to you you have put some effort into that

If buying private ask the owner to show you where the Exup valve is located on the bike and how often they service it, if you don't like the answers walk away. Someone who has properly looked after their bike will be able to answer your questions and demonstrate that the cover bolts are not seized, this would be a good indication that the rest of the bike has been looked after. If buying from a dealer check out the condition of the Exup cover bolts and if they look rusted and rotten assume the worst, in any case ask that the dealer service the EXUP prior to you collecting the bike.

Like the previous posters have said other than the Exup valve the only real weak points are the OEM rear suspension, corrosion and flaky engine paint. If the bike still has the original shock factor in the cost of getting it refurbished or replaced as this really does effect the bikes handling and ultimately your riding experience.

forgot to mention aftermarket headers...........if it's a well known make then fine, if it's a Sandy's special then avoid.
no-one has mentioned 3rd gear either yet! selector arm gets bent on ham fisted wheelie bikes. should be obvious on a test ride though!

Isnt it because they do away with the exup valve which is a bad thing?

Well, This time tomorrow evening I'll be the proud owner of a 2001 Fazer thou, just under 30000 on the clock with service history, hopefully it's all good

Pics soon enough, got some touching up on engine paint etc then I'll get the camera out, love the look of it    it's got a rack on it which I'm taking off for now so I'm on the lookout of some standard grab handles (2001 model) hopefully getting some miles is as soon as the painting is done

Just replaced standard grab handles for a givi monorack so have originals spare. In black and free if you pay postage?

Just a quick note to say the Fazer thou is the best bike I've owned, did 240 miles yesterday tooling around Shropshire and the surrounding counties  . I just couldn't get off the thing ! I must admit I havn't felt like that about a bike for many a year. I would put a pic but don't know how lol

Is 'tooling around' the same as 'riding like a tool'? or should that be 'tootling around'?
