South East London based - Where to ride?
« on: 20 April 2015, 12:15:03 pm »
Hi All,

As the title suggests, I'm based in South East London (Technically Kent) and am after some advice about where to head for some fun roads.

I've found a few nice roads around Knockholt and down towards Hevers Castle but only really by luck. I'm happy to head further out, last year I road down to Battle for the fun of it and found some nice roads on the way. In fairness, after commuting in London, anything with a tree by it seems exotic!

Anyway I'm hoping to go out this Saturday and wondered if anyone knew any nice routes around the area. I realise I probably need to get outside the M25 (and to be honest, that's a bonus, the air is much cleaner there  ;) ) but if anyone has any tips I'd love to find some nice roads.

Cheers

HJF

That site may be of great use!

I'm in Bexley but rarely get time to ride for fun now - best bet is to combine a couple of those routes together and go out and try it!

Just a suggestion. Down the A22 to East Grinstead then across to Tunbridge Wells on the A264. Pick up the A21 south towards Hastings but turn off towards Goudhust on the A262 all the way to Beddenden. From there, take the A28 through Tenterden and down to Hastings.
Hastings to Eastbourne on the A259 and then scoot back up the A22 to London.

BBROWN1664 - Cheers for the route, will take a look, sounds good :)

slimwilly - I went to see my folks who were on holiday in north Wales last year (between Barmouth and Harlech). Road up to Snowdon and back in glorious sunshine with barely any traffic. Easily my best day on a motorbike, including a trip to Normandy for the D-day landings anniversary

HarryHornby & midden - I hadn't and I'll have a look. Would be nice to ride with some other people instead of on my lonesome Whereabouts do you meet up?

Here's a quick route from my little red note book of road trips.

Head out to Westerham
B2026
B2028 To Haywards Heath then pick up
B2112 to Ditcling then
Ditchling Road to Brighton. Bacon egg roll and ice cream stop.
Then
A270
A27 Lewes
A277
A275
A22 Ashurstwood Turn R upto
A264 Follow to A228
A228 to Leybourne Then back home on
A20.

I second this. The roads down were i used to live were boring and not well maintained. Much better up here.  :evil

That would be the Finchingfield loop I suspect. Good to ride midweek but too busy and too much plod at weekends.

Most of our Kent area rides end up at the coast usually Lydd, Camber and over the border into Rye. Depends what you are into we mostly aim for B roads and small A roads where we can get the hammer down without too much other traffic and police interference. We are not too bothered about anything but the next corner or what is likely to be pulling out of the next junction.

Other folk are into riding larger A roads and sightseeing. There are some nice runs around Bodium castle for that. If you get lonely or want to make idle conversation with dozens of middle aged motorcyclists hanging around the seafront at Rye, Blue and White cafe Mersham, H's cafe Barham, Bury Hill Sussex, Box Hill Surrey and the Oakdene Wrotham on certain eveniings in Summer.

Then there are ' bikers'  that are into ploddding down to Hastings on mayday runs in amongst hundreds of other bikes are dozens of old bill, each to their own but I couldnt think of a worse way to waste motorcycling time.

I've done a bit of all of the above but my favourite stuff is the A/B roads. B roads can be a pain sometimes if the road surface isn't maintained and they can sometimes become a bit narrow for my liking... unfortunately most decent A roads are main arteries and end up carrying lots of traffic which spoils the ride :(

It was the Burnham Bends then up to Bradwell and down through Steeple to Latchingdon. That was actually over a year ago...
