Speedo and tacho intermittent
« on: 19 April 2015, 07:10:14 pm »
Hi guys.
Been out for the first time on the fazer. Runs well, sounds awesome, but my speedo isn't working (i don't think it's worked since I changed my fork seals, but haven't been out on it so that's just a guess) and my tacho works but it seems a bit sticky? As in I can Rev it up and it'll go up the clock,l and drop back down, but then I can be cruising and it'll drop to zero, then go back up to whatever revs I'm at.

I suppose my question is, are the clocks connected in anyway or is the speedo sensor straight from the wheel to the clock? And same the the tacho? Just going to check and make sure they aren't loose.

Cheers in advance

It is trying to tell you the fault code, most likely 4000 revs to zero then back to normal revs. Problem with the speed sensor
Check the wire cable to the front wheel sensor, you may have pinched it or it has been rubbing off the disc.

If your speedo isn't working (could be several reasons- most common being broken sensor in the wheel or broken wire)
Once you go over 10k revs the counter will drop to zero, up to 4k, then to what the revs actually are then repeat until you turn off the ignition, there's only two ways to prevent this- either don't rev over 10k whilst riding or fix the speed sensor problem.
If the tacho is reading a different figure to 4k then it is a fault code referring to a different problem from a speed sensor one!

Check the length of the wire from wheel, easy to snag it against the brake disc and cut through the protective outer layer!

It did go to 4k actually now that you mention it... so the Rev counter is fine it's just telling me about my speed sensor. I must have pinched it somewhere cos it worked before.
The speed sensor doesn't go straight up to the clocks though does it?

It's a digital signal not a cable spinning like most bikes that era like you're possibly thinking.
When the cable gets snagged it tends to short out when touching anything metal like the fork leg if it hasn't completely sliced one of the wires that is!

Otherwise I think it does go straight to the clocks, or a connector block close to the clocks

Speed sensor goes to a connector in the electrical connections box under the tank and from there to the clocks

Checked the wire and it did have a crimp in it, I've snipped it and rejoined it but still no joy. Didn't want to have to get the tank off but I supple I have no choice at the minute

Also going to check that the lugs on the rotor are fitted properly

Did your repair stop the 4000 rev error code?

The rotor is toast. No it didn't because there's still a problem with the sensor.

Had the wheel off and the inner part of the sensor had bits chipped off, and there were no lugs?

That's your answer then, make sure you get the newer one with the plastic lugs!

Yep. If I can ever find one, eBay breakers have already sold them and no one sells them online (for a reasonable price!)

Should there be lugs on the inside part? Just want to make sure I'm getting the right one. Anyone got a picture of one?

I think it's the ceramic part I'm after. Rest of the plastic casing etc looks to be good

The ceramic and plastic is one unit, if one bit breaks you replace the whole thing- Easy to get hold of

£20 is a bit of a bugger but hey!

Ahh it makes sense no. Mine looks like the second one. So does that fit inside the out bit with the wire on or is the whole thing one unit?
Punkstig when I go on that link it comes up empty basket. What did you put in as I've tried fazer speed sensor etc :(

£20 isn't too bad, I was expecting more!

It just fits inside that unit, it's magnetised so just slides out to remove old one and push new one in, it's the ceramic that's generally the weak part that cracks and breaks!

Brilliant, that's ordered. I'll be able to see how fast I'm going now!
Thanks a lot!
