Open Source (free) web page design
« on: 07 February 2012, 04:52:36 pm »
Any suggestions?

Want something the other half can use to design a simple web page for our home server (forms, tables etc) that creates code I can hook up to the database without too much hacking (I remember the days with frontpage producing reams reams of incomprehensible crud for even a simple hello world page, so hopefully nothing like that)

am playing around with Joomla at the moment, pretty powerful, but fairly simple interface. But of a learning curve, should handle everything you want.

Most decent hosters will one-click install it on your domain, and all dev done there.

Other options include Drupal and Wordpress, but I havent played with those yet..

I know of joomla.

I want to be able to create my own pages and run them on a low power web server in house. Joomla and the likes are web applications and far too heavy weight.

Not sure whats best then, sorry. You can install Joomla locally though, using WAMP to handle all the web servery stuff.

I use Trellian.
It's just a simple HTML web editor.
If you know a little HTML it's a handy editor.
I build my web site on my hard drive then upload to my web space.

I just spent ages trying various cms's and ended up with wordpress. Ignore the fact that is a blogging thing, it does normal stuff too. Once you've got your head around the concept, it's much much easier to use than Joomla/drupal/e107 etc etc.

Was recommended WP by a web developer, so is used by pro's as well!!

Ear's me new site www.cdrc.cc (still needs a few tweaks, but only went live at the w/e)

How come I only get one email reply notification per thread?

Downloaded Aptana Studio - based on Eclipse. Not massivly impressed as yet, but only just started using it....

Will try some of the other suggestions though.
