you have to take the lower section off and the impeller should be in a little box thingy.be careful the cast can crack easy.

Might also just be full of salt in the tubes if it was used in the sea, lots of fresh water running would help that.
Out boards are easy just take the lid off and you'll recognise most of it. Striping the leg is more complicated but a man of you calibre should cope. ;)

Ah well in that case its full of poo.
Seriously the lower part of the Themes is tidal so still a possibility but impeller is most likely.

Could be a clean out job, but my memory of those Mariner 5hp's is that they don't widdle out much anyway? Only a little engine, so doesn't need so much cooling. As for whether it was used - I've seen loads of outboards in Turkey on boats which are cosseted beasts - do ship to shore runs twice daily for a week, laid up after a run in a bucket of fresh water, then sit on the back rail for the rest of the year!

Like anything, a strip down can't hurt!

Straight out to the garage after work 30 mins later and its stripped down, impeller has lost all its blades, ive found a few of them but will flush out the lower leg and see what I can find.came apart easy , no corrosion on any of the bolts/ fittings, all looking fairly clean, impeller housing has a small mark but think it will be ok.....so, next question  :).....do I buy off ebay or go to my local marina ?

Anything with marine attached to the front will cost 5 times the normal price than if you went somewhere else.
There are loads on ebay at a reasonable price.
depends where the gouge is, can you describe which surface i.e. the surface that the blades contact or the side surfaces. Usually a flatten with sand paper will do it.

hi nick...the sides of the impeller casing are good, the mark is on the bottom of the casing, you can just about feel it with your fingernail, iam sure it will clean up with a fine grade wet and dry or simular....just found one on ebay.£10 +free delivery from PACER MARINE

Should be alright, clean it up, you have to think is the impeller blade going to get destroyed by the mark, that is maybe what happened to the original impeller.

From what he describes, more like some shite got in, and the nick was maybe caused by a failing blade?
