Any ornothologists in the house ?
« on: 27 February 2015, 06:22:07 pm »
So, Foccer's, had a bird strike today, a hard one, thought it was a pheasant so went back to retrieve it (mmm, lunch)
Noticed my speedo had stopped working but then started again, my fuel gauge mysteriously went down to quarter tank from 3/4's and my front indicators had stopped working. Also broke my n/s fairing infill.
The main strike was on the h/light cover then it glanced off and hit my knee.

Anyway, when I got back to the spot I had hit it, to my dismay it wasn't a pheasant but some kind of bird of prey.
Obviously I was a bit gutted to have hit such a beautiful bird but couldn't really identify what species it was.
Can anyone on here throw some light on this for me and identify it ?

I'd say it's a Buzzard. Red kites have lighter coloured heads.

Poor bugger (Both you and the bird).

What a shame

Ill come across all hippy here but i really do value animals lives, i couldnt live without chicken or beef but i despise people that would intentionally hurt an animal for fun or out of spite....obviously not talking about you there dazza i know you have good taste in birds :b ...perhaps it was after a photo shoot.

But some animals are defo just a bit cooler than others and birds of prey are cool.

I do often wonder with birds in general though......all that foccin sky to fly through and they decide to cut in front of vehicles a few foot from the ground.

Lovely creatures birds of prey, but red kites are becoming a positive menace around here. Trouble is, there's lots of road kill around, which they love, but to have them panic and take off in your face just as you come around a corner at a good clip is not good for the ol ticker!

Still can't see majority of pics on here but with regards to red kites they were reintroduced into my area (Herts, beds, bucks) many years ago and are thankfully thriving, beautiful birds!

Think you may be right, look's like a buzzard. red kite's have lighter heads. Whatever it was, as you can see, It was a large bird and with the speed I was going, certainly hit me with some force.

I'm just truly sorry that I killed it.

If only I had been going faster.  :b    I would have missed it.  :D

Yeah, with you there Noggy, not the sort of photo shoot I like to take. :(

Weyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy :b

Never mind Dazza, you didnt mean it mate. Actually its probably a good thing you didnt see until too late coz otherwise youd be swerving to avoid it and coulda ended up in the ditch so really it was a matter of it being it or you.......obviously it underestimated the mighty fazer.

I had a bird strike while gunning it last summer, hit my shin above my boot and i was screaming in pain inside my helmet....i didnt see what bird it was and i was a bit saddened coz at the speed i was doing it musta been like being roundhouse kicked by the hulk.

I decided to guess that it was a bird i didnt like so much.

I went with Emu :lol

The easily identifiable tail is the clue here,,,if you showed the tail we could see if it has the "v" inverted in it which is a Kite...or square like a buzzard

Don't be daft. The easy way to tell if it's a kite is, does it have a string attached  :rolleyes

I know.  :\

Unfortunately that's what happens when you're just winging it, you know, making it up as you go, flying by the seat of your pants  :rolleyes
