Fork Seal replacement
« on: 08 February 2015, 10:39:03 pm »
One of the fork seals has started leaking and I'm going to replace it.

I've read the guide and plenty of other posts on the subject, so know what's entailed.

What I am not so sure about is whether I need to replace the bushing too.  Budget is tight, so I don't want to spend out if I don't have to.  If the bushings are worn, what's the downside of not replacing them?

Bike has done just over 60K and I don't know if/when any of the fork internals were serviced.  The dust caps do look a bit chewed, as if they have been removed/lifted and re-used.

Chances are they are probably ok. However if you can afford to buy them then it would really be worth replacing them while the forks are apart.

A job that's next on my list. I'm no expert though, so canna answer your questions too well!

Also being on a budget, but still wanting to stick to genuine seals, found cheapest here: Motorcyclespareparts.eu, especially now the Euro has really dropped against the pound. Check the clips around the seals too, mine have corroded a bit which isn't going to help matters. They're only a couple of quid anyway.

If they're heavily worn they can cause the seal to leak. You're not going to know what condition they're in until you take them apart.

If you replace the fork oil do you need to replace the seals as well?
