They are mounted in the front of the frame just behind the headstock, on the front of the battery carrier, which is infront of the air-box, which is under the fuel tank.
Its quite tight in that space, it's been a while since I had the tank off on my sons, not sure if you can get access to undo them without taking the air-box & battery carrier out, sounds daunting but is not to bad. If thats the case, you will need quite a long alen key to undo the clamps on the intake rubbers, and large combination pliers are good for the pipe clips.
The reason I was in there, was to get at the connector to the high beam switch so that I could mod it so that both of his lights were on when on low beam, that's something else you might consider while you are there, or at least putting a wire there to make it easy if you want to do it in the future
Here's a couple clips about getting as far as the battery, you can see the top coil infront of the battery
Dont bother tying the tank up, for 30 seconds work, take it off and get it out of the way and it wont get scratched
There is a big plastic clip that makes sure the fuel pipe does not come off, then the fitting self seals when you unplug it, just have a couple of rags around for the odd dribble out of the pipe.
Hope that goes towards helping.
