fzs600 block hairline crack? 2003
« on: 05 January 2015, 07:14:13 pm »
As above.

Got a small hairline crack just where the water pump sits in.

What is the crank case made from so I can look into welding work?

Thanks

Its Aluminium but I doubt that it can be welded without stripping the engine as TiG welding gets the metal very hot and likely to melt rubber seals and gaskets. I manages to get away with it on my FJ that needed some crash damage building up on the casings where the previous owner had bodged it with Chemi Metal  :wall

I would rebuild the engine on another set of crank cases if the weld is not possible.

I see.
I won't be able to get a pic I've tried taking one before and the camera doesn't pick it up its that thin a crack.

Half of me thinks I should but a decent used engine and be done. Cam chain needs doing and finding cases won't be easy.

Then there's the rebuild which I can't do myself.

All adding up on this engine :/

I'd take it to a welding workshop and get their opinion on it. The problem is if there's rubber seals as deefer said and if they can get access to it easily. If they can weld it I'd be surprised if they charge more than 30 quid to do it so it'd be worth getting them to look at it.
