I did for a good many years, not in the top groups mind, I was in Masters,30 plus years,and a bit slower than some of them,i raced in England,Wales,Scotland and over on the summer ski slopes in the French Alps.
Here is something to let you see how extreme the track building is now,and what the bikes have to put up with.
My last bike ten years ago was £3500 quid,now you will see why

Had a go at downhilling on my mtb, and been out with some semi-pro riders.
These guys are bonkers, and avoid trying to keep up as you will probably die!

Look's quite tame I thought.
Now if they were to ride that course on a penny farthing.... I'd be impressed
