With this R1 fork do I need the R1 wheel NO and radial brakes YES or will it work with gen1 wheel and blue spot brakes NO AND YES SEE NOTE and then able to upgrade to full R1 front end later. Do all R1 forks require R1 unmodified yolks on both these options.BOTTOM YOKE WILL NEED MODDING IN EVERY CASE TO FIT GEN 1 Will I need new front mudguard for both options YES

NOTE gen 1 wheel is 5 bolt r1 is 6 so discs are a issue if wanting 320mm
this means upgrading to r1 wheels

to make this simple bbb i recon your best option is a set 03 r1 legs to gen 2 top and bottom yokes
this retains ya wheel and current calipers whilst still giving you a good fork upgarde
you can add extenders at a later date

Back to pondering this again. I nearly had a pair of 5PW forks from ebay last night, outbid at last minute!

Does anyone know if the billet yokes on ebay (Billet bike bits) are a bolt straight on solution? What I mean is, can I just buy a pair of forks and one of these or will I still need to get things machined and / or a  fork stem imported from the states.

They are about 450 quid, which seems a lot for something you will hardly see but if they do the job they might be worth it.

I am guessing that otherwise I can use a CNC machined top yoke for bar conversion on an R1  or gen 2 top yokes (100 -125 quid) bottom yoke from any R1?? (50 quid) plus fitting a new stem and fitting together (est 180 quid) so about 350 quid and all the hassle as I dont have any good engineering contacts.

I know Luke has just done Nick Crisp's bike, that looks good. Any info on what options and costs that was?

I did mine on the cheap but that was largely due to having a few parts at my disposal.  I modified the stem by machining 11mm (IIRC) more threads on and cutting 11mm off the top - this avoids the problem of the top yoke being held higher resulting in you needing to run the forks further up the yokes lowering ride height.  Machined the inserts for some R6 top yokes as you would with R1 ones ( essentially they are the same as R1 ones but only cost £25 ) and used a YZF750 bottom yoke which requires no modifications.

I seem to remember having to do some grinding to get the steering lock to line up, this may not be required with the more popular R1 top yoke installation - and of course the strenthening work on the top yoke for the fork bolts...

Modifying the stem like that means you only loose 11mm or so in front rideheight so it doesnt drop as much as a normal install (but still more than devilsyams solution with the extenders - I believe it sits 11mm lower than stock with my setup).

This was with 4XV forks using the standard wheel, brakes etc.

For this you would need R1/R6 top yoke, YZF750 bottom yoke, machining work for the std stem, top yoke spacers making and that is about it.

Ah no, I almost forgot, the YZF750 bottom yokes are for 2mm larger diam forks so I made some inserts from 1mm alloy that line the holes, you can't see them and work a treat.

It's still a fair amount of work, you certainly appreciate the cost that some ready to fit setups cost once your done.  I put some pics up of my "fitment" on here somewhere.
