Bus lanes...............
« on: 27 January 2012, 12:47:14 pm »
I hear the trial to allow motorbikes in bus lanes has been extended.

I always felt the biggest danger was vehicles turning left without looking and pedestrians jumping out from behind stationary traffic????

Any stories from you actual bikers??? :eek

we're being given permanent access to some lanes:

http://www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/redroutes/10151.aspx

i think some are being added to the list tho i've seen little difference on my commute through SE London. biggest prob i find is, like you, people turning across the bus lane - from either left or right. Generally, after several near misses, i just go cautiously past junctions. Cyclists are another agg; pulling out to overtake without looking/signalling seemingly under the impression the lane belongs to them and them alone...

Poxy cyclists, are they allowed to jump red lights? Ive lost count how many times Ive had near hits with cyclists jumping red lights.
What gives them the right to do that? I always shout abuse at them, it makes me feel better. :\

'Poxy cyclists, are they allowed to jump red lights?'

nope. Same as bikers aren't allowed to speed or have loud cans. But that's different innit. Tosser :moon

in all the time i've been biking in London, speeding and loud cans have never been a safety issue. Not once.
Cyclists hurling themselves in front of me without looking/signalling however happens daily.
And I speak as a regular cyclist - but i at least look before i stampede across lanes, actually i signal too and if i jump a red light - pretty sure i look to see what the f*ck might be coming the other way first...

Ah - but there's places outside Laaadan :lol

Plenty of peeps speeding on the motorway too, but no-one ever has a go at them ;)

Oh - and I get pissed of by red light jumpers too. Had an 'interesting' exchange with a woman a few yrs ago who did and didn't like being congratulated when she did stop for one :lol :lol :lol (I was on me pushbike at the time, kept stopping but caught her up every time)

I used to commute through Bristol a lot where bikes have been able to bus lanes for ages. The main dangers aren't so much people turning left as you have quite good visibility of them and can see them move (even when they don't bother to indicate you get a 6th sense of when they are about to turn left.)

The most dangerous think (IMO) are car coming from the opposite direct turning right across your path, typically the traffic is queued and someone has flashed the car which then turns across the stationary traffic and then the bus lane. Quite often it seems to be 'I can't see a bus, so it must be clear'. Again it's something out to look for - just watch out when queued traffic has left a gap for someone to turn through.

Apart from that I think its works well. Just a shame they let buses use the same lane really.
