New TopBox, too big?

I was sick of having a small topbox, which couldn't fit my lid plus other bits in, making it all a bit pointless.


So I went and bought a 47L Givi last week, I came home today to the package and now I'm wondering if it's just too big for the bike? It just looks bloody odd to me, thoughts?


I might sell it and buy the same one but in 37L.

Exactly. As long as it doesn't tear off and kill someone who cares what it looks like. The standard top boxes are only designed for something like 5 or 10kg which is nothing so don't overload it.

Looks strange to me, how would it be  in filtering down narrow gaps in standing traffic? but I do agree with the above,

Nothing wrong with a big box (Ooh-er missus), got one for my Fazer and had no problems with it at all. If It's narrower than your mirrors, so you should be fine with filtering.

Just don't be tempted to put too much weight in it when riding!

i think you`ll be fine...sit on the bike and get someone else to take a picture from the same angle,iam pretty sure your arms and elbows will be wider,i have a 50ltr on my thou.ok a bigger bike but once iam on the road i dont know its there  ....might be thats its just different to what your used to,give it a while and you wont know how you did without it...

Looks fine to me, probably a lot narrower than your bars and mirrors. Get the tape measure out.

People are right about the weight limits though, don't just go lumping half your house into it because there's always the small chance that over time a series of speed bumps or the like can cause an incident, and i've been there with a sports rack which simply split in half and the box overtook me when i was slowing down.
The actual reason they're that big is primarily to fit 2 crash helmets in when parked up.

After having ridden different kinds... I say fuck a bike without a (big) topcase! You want to ride, go places... you need to carry some things and lock them up when leaving the bike parked.


FZS600 is a rather BIG (looking) bike. So it can carry a big topcase. If it were  some small bike, 125, 250 cc, but fazer...

I have a 50+ litre one.



I don't care if it looks big. It is just the right size. 2 helmets, jacket etc. When a woman goes with me it is too bloody small. Told her yesterday she should ride her own bike, so we can carry all the stuff. 




Filtering is easy with that one - still not wider than the bike, and rides above rearview mirrors.

I've never been keen on the idea of leaving my lid in the box in case the bike ever got pilfered, that would just really piss me off.
My box generally has a small tupperware container of useful tools, wet proof trousers, a bike manual and all different types of gloves used according to current weather.
There's also a spray bottle of foam stuff which takes grease off your hands without need for water or a towel, which is quite handy gear.

Took it out today, and saw it outside the garage for the first time and it's actually just right size wise.


Agree about the weight thing, I snapped a rentech last year for that reason. The only reason for wanting the bigger box is to fit a change of clothes and a lid in there, just makes life more pleasant not having to carry it around.

As far as weight goes:


The heaviest, least bulky stuff goes into tank bag.


Less heavy - more bulky - goes into panniers.


Lightest stuff goes into topbox, as well as stuff you can (want to) leave locked with the parked bike.




For shorter trips though, It's just a choice between a box and a tankbag. Tankbag when I want to ride REAL FAST ARARRRRRR, and topbox for the 99% of my rides.

It does look massive, but... I have a 52L box fitted to my CBF 125  . And when I'm going to the gym before work, I also have a big gym bag on the pillion seat. Who cares what it looks like, its your transport and as long as it's safe... Who gives a FOC!!!

I have a 55 litre Givi E3 Box on my FZS600, so no I don't think yours is too big.

I've had a maxia e52 on the back of mine for years. Used to commute through 'orrible central Ldn traffic and squeezed through the narrowest of gaps  . Have only ever caught it on high sided vehicles (bus & a flat bed) a few of times and that was because I was leaning - so beware of that

I regret not following the advice of getting the biggest box I could with smaller panniers. I got the V46 instead of the e52/e55 and it's often very full with bulky light stuff. If I haven't gone up to the 10kg weight limit I must have come close.
