Think my engine is going to die :(
« on: 11 September 2014, 02:03:39 am »
After all the work ive put into my fazer getting it from almost scrap to gleaming i decided to paint the front fairing today but it came out a bit crap so was talking about getting it done by a pro...

Bike night tonight so off for a ride i go but a bike pulled alongside and opened the throttle so i tried to keep up... accidently in the wrong gear and bounced off the limiter for a second.. about 100 meters later id got up to about 100(kmh obviously) and i heard a strange noise, pulled over and i have a rattle/knocking sound coming from the right hand side, sounds like bottom end but not sure.

I limped home but the noise only seems to appear at 4000rpm+ and stops if i decelerate but happens more if i accelerate hard past 4000.

the strange noise is probably someone you collided with , speeding  :evil , stop road racing and use a track if you want to act like a fool on public roads

You do realise this is a motorbike forum, full of like-minded people who nearly all kind of think the same?

Paul has got a problem with his bike which he's asking for help with, he hasn't come on here to be told off or insulted. :groan

You could take the starter gear and clutch cover off and see if anything's loose.

I once forgot to change gear and looked down at the clocks and I was in the red zone.  As far as I can remember the rev limiter (if it's got one) didn't kick in.

So.. I'm not like minded as paul, no way, and I've personally met my like minded people on here including ex police officers and instructors, who would share my view. So yep, were like minded but not your like minded  ;)

No, no, no, i haven't finished yet.

When you have asked questions on here, or have asked for any further advice on several occasions, we have been more than accommodating in replying and giving you the help and knowledge that you have required, because that's what people do on forums.

What Paul has done is explain that he's turned a bike from a ropey condition into a good looking runner, which as i also know myself takes a lot of time and money to do, probably too much if i was to be honest.

Now he's saying he could have a serious engine problem, which must make him feel just a bit gutted at the very least, yet instead of offering any help to him you've decided to take a pop at him instead?

Are you getting some sort of kick out of doing that or something?

We already know about the dangers of speeding, just riding a bike is dangerous enough, but it's a risk we've chosen to take. ALL OF US.

So maybe sticking to the question that's being asked in the future would be a better way of responding, rather than making people stand in the naughty corner?

They definitely have a rev limiter. It cuts the power at around 14,000 until the revs drop down to about 12,500 and then the engine comes back as I found out over taking a bus (badly :lol) Hitting the limiter isn't going to cause any damage. If you were holding the throttle wide open for an extended period then yeah maybe but not just hitting it once and then back down. Paulfzs can you get a video of the noise? If not you should probably bring it to a mechanic and let him listen to it

You can't beat taking a Jap inline 4 up to the redline 8) .....it's what they are designed to do and the little 600 engine loves high revs....so long as it is in good working order and serviced properly then it isn't an issue......i thrashed my 600 and if anything it ran better afterwards.

Sounds like yours was ready to go Paul so don't go kicking yourself because you had a little bit of sport.

Good luck with getting it sorted out.

Just throwing this out there but it isn't a clutch related rattle is it? Try revving it with the clutch lever pulled in when you take the video to see if there's any difference. I took my clutch apart to try and find a reason for a rattle that was apparently "normal" and a bit of the bikes character so I just accept it as that now and forget about it. It performs fine and the clutch was spotless, just one of them things on a 14 year old 4 cylinder I guess, they wont ever sound like a S1000R!

Tweety, I don't suppose you ever had an account previously called keratos did you? Haven't you got some better things to be doing such as trying to sound like Stephen Hawking leading a seminar on cleaning a bike engine with soda?

I joined the forum recently having procured a FZS600 having previously owned a vstrom and before that a bandit, before that a GSXR ... a ZXR, diversion, street triple, goldwing, bantam, GS,  BMW... List goes on. Came here on recommendation from a fellow biker who instructor at NW Police HQ, Hutton although he does not himself own a fz. My fellow blood bikers run a charity , or rather support a charity. I'm going to swear now....and be deliberately controversial ...
I'm fed up of running around for fkn idiots  'like minded' fools who think it's acceptable to treat roads like racetracks in the rightous opinion that it's somehow okay to thrill out on our roads in blatent disregard for other road users and pedestrians, no matter how you want to hide or dress up the forum posts.   In my 40 yrs riding I've encountered more than a share of numpties who have blatent disregard for life, their own included. Unfortunately, we have to disregard our emotions and save lives irrespective of our personal views but the more people like you defend these 'innocent' actions , the bigger the task of re-education... I don't think we will ever stop... Evidently
In the unlikely event we ever meet , I'd  take you by the scruff and introduce you to mothers and father's who have lost loved ones... And see if you then hold your arrogant head so high

Case closed , unnotifying from this thread , soap box dismantled, argue and self congratulate each other at your will... It won't be read by me. Don't care if I'm banned... If people find this view at odds with their convictions, then I am in the wrong place indeed.

And no...I don't know what keratos is other than a nasty scab ... How relevant if YOU  to raise this

There.. I did say I would be controversial

Riding at high speed on the wrong side of the road, causing a head on collision, AND i just read elsewhere they were also going the wrong way round a roundabout beforehand!!!
Maybe these "idiots" who treat the road like a "racetrack" need some sort of training...........oh...........wait a minute.  :rolleyes

I wasn't really going to post about the speeds but i might aswell, ive been riding for a fair few years now and ive owned sports bikes up to 1.1 litre, ive had my fun with the throttle and i very rarely do it anymore, as Wednesday was bike night and i was on a dual carriageway i thought heck why not, ive done less than 400 miles since owning this bike and ive not been over 75-80.

The conditions where good, the road was clear other than about 5-6 cars which id filtered past and there wasn't a school near by, id say that is fair game for a bit of throttle fun, backed up by the other motorcyclist wanting to race me.

i have been on the track on various other bikes but not this one mainly because i can't afford it right now after spending so much on my bike to make it look good.

Now this was a fairly straight road with 2 roundabouts on it and no traffic on both of them, not that i was speeding through them anyway, i do indeed go out and get my knee down and pull wheelies, the wheelies are always on private land and the knee downs i do on an old unused roundabout, in terms of being a fool on a bike id say i act a fool when its safe to rather than those ive seen trying to kill themselves.

None the less my engine is broken so call it karma and you don't need to say anymore about it.

I don't whether this is possible, but I wonder if you can get the sump off without taking the engine out.
That may allow you to check for crank and big end play.

Don't think you need to justify yourself to anyone. We're all adults here well most of us
