what is the metal...
« on: 27 August 2014, 01:53:33 am »
... Used on:
Gear link rod
Gear arm
Front pegs

Mine are pitty and black instead of shiny

Thinking of electrolysis to clean... Because autosyl, alloy wheel cleaner and wire wool not helping.

TIA

first 2 are stainless, third is alloy. use a magnet to determine the metal.
polish and elbow grease will work or get a polishing kit for a drill thats how i did mine.

I wish they were stainless steel but

Gear link rod --------steel with som sort of paint coating
Gear arm  --------steel with som sort of paint coating

Front pegs---------- alloy

I took it off and I have a bench grinder with a set of polishing mops which is the only way to get the gear leaver like this.

Then a coat of clear laquer

Pegs you can do with any metal polish autosol/brasso and can do by hand

Bloody hell they look fantastic
Mine look dated and autosol brasso  etc not shitfting the black or cleaning. don't have a vice or grinder or mops. Own a dremel... Would this work and what compounds and bits/tools for it, would work. How would i use them? I've no experience with the dremel , it was given to me but I've never used it so any noob help is appreciated

Now now. We are all human with the blessed human mind and emotion, free will and spirit. Your opinion is a view and a preference. Let others have an equal right to a view and opinion, and respect it keeping negative comments to yourself. Be fair and equitable please

I actually enjoy clenching my bike. It's a hobby and therapeutic. No doubt fazersharp feels the same ... And what a great job he has done in detailing the looks

Thank you

Every credit to the shiny bits on ya Fazer though. I did my first boxeye like that a few moons ago, and she looked ace, but my 30k all year round commute dulled them too quick. Now I'm just far too lazy to keep them that clean!

You are in fact 100% right I do spend far too much time polishing it and no where near enough time riding it.

MC680x0 we all take the piss out of each other on here and mostly everyone knows its  just a laugh.

Search the forum for polishing / buff/ mops and stuff as there was a thread a while ago about it all, I am no expert

I used wet and dry paper on mine and then lacqured it. Looked good for about a month and then went rusty so don't bother! If you really wanted to you could get a bit of stainless rod and the correct taps and make a stainless adjuster. Depends how mad you are though :lol

Usually the result of bad prep, sorry his dudeness, and it blooms up form inside.

So five minutes of sanding and two light coats of rattle can lacquer isn't a professional job? :lol

I keep my bike fairly clean but I think polishing a daily runner is a total waste of time there's no way you can keep it shiny unless you're out every other day polishing it. Don't bother you'll only regret it in the long run

just had a week of commuting after going anal on the polish last weekend; looked like a christmas tree after the polish; now it looks like a turd. and after all that work.  :'(
so from now on, I'll probably just do the weekly clean to get rid of salt (I live near the Sea), and just frekin ride the thing  :rolleyes

powder coating is also a reasonably robust option for all the foothangers etc.
