They have that very distinctive rumble.

My work is about a mile away from RAF Northolt and is under the direct flight path of helicopters that fly to and from there.

Every other day a Chinook flies over our building and the whole place shakes.

It's also where the Typhoon fighter jets were stationed when the Olympics were on, it was quite awesome watching and listening to them take off.

Coming to a town near you, maybe.
There is a Canadian one popped over for the summer to join the last British one flying.

Eight Merlins indeed! I was in the garage fiddling with the bike when I heard them - we get lot of aircraft flying around as there are a fair few flying schools in the area but, as you can imagine, these sounded different... I stepped out just in time to watch them sweep by. Mouth open, speechless. I knew the Canadian one was in the UK I just didn't expect them to fly over my garden - and so low too! Incredible.
Imagine what 50 would have sounded like on their way to Germany? Probably right over my garden then as well?

I got a chance to crawl around in the back of the BBMF Lancaster when I was a kid with the ATC. Got a photo of our squadron (4F) lined up in front of it outside the hangar somewhere  :D

We did a week at RAF Coningsby - felt privileged to be able to do that even at the tender age of (about) 13. We also got to help the mechs working on the Phantoms that were based there at the time - now those were impressive jets!

If you want to hear the sound of massed Merlin engines, the Flying Legends air show at Duxford is the time and place to do it  ;)

Was out in the garden when they flew over, they were followed by a Spitfire about a minute behind them. Awesome sight and sound.

As the BBMF is based up in Lincolnshire and I'm just off the A1 at Peterborough, I often see the Lanc with his Hurricane and Spitfire on each wingtip as they fly back home using the A1 to navigate.  That's an impressive sight and sound, looking forward to a pair of Lancs flying over tomorrow, that should sound amazing.  I'll keep my camera handy and see if I can get some decent shots of them as they go over.

They've obviously finished for today and are heading back to Coningsby.  The buggers have just flown over my back garden at about 500 feet......

Im back home at Ascot for the weekend and up at the racecourse they have the Redbull air race thingy going on, had the wonderful sounding spitfire buzzing around and a chinnock helicopter doing a display, wasnt half throwing the thing around up there. Got the Red arrows tomorow. Loads of bikes up there today, sadly stuck in the cage

Got a picture of a Lanc bomber on my lounge wall-parked on the airfield in early morning mist. On the subject of Merlin engines how about the Mosquito with two of them! What a lovely sound when they start up spitting flames and smoke from the 12 stub exhausts(no after market cans needed!)
Was up at Corris Caravan Park over weekend and we were buzzed by jets(from Valley?) twice yesterday!

They were supposed to be but were grounded due to the wind so didn't go anywhere today.  Bet that didn't happen in 1944......

a lanc flew over oulton park last sunday whilst we were at BSB, was fucking awesome!

If they have been out flying they sometimes call in at the Cadwell Park BSB meeting as well as its not far from their base.

Yep the sound of 96 Rolls Royce cylinders is certainly music to the ears!.They did about 4 circuits at display height, which I guess is around the same height you saw them at maybe.Pity I only had my (relatively) old mobile with me for pics and not the digital cam.

Don't know if it still is but 'Vera' was flying out of Humberside airport and you could have flights in her. Cannot confirm but was told 3K for thirty minute flight or 5K in one of the gun turrets and they were sold out!
