I've had both now loved both for different reasons.
Gen1- loved the comfy cruising capabities and big tank range didn't like the weight and the bike was a bit to tall for me. (I'm only 5ft 8) did mods to improve power the Ivan's fully Monty and the r6 helped the sometimes bouncy ride.slightly dated looks now but fantastic at holding it's money

Gen2- love the amount of power the bike has (been modded A lot) like that the bike is smaller and more manageable for me. It really corners well and is totally differnt bike (shouldn't have been called a fazer) don't like crappy tank range really isn't built for cuising as I'm sore after 150mile the gen 1 I could do 300+. They don't hold there value well (mine was £2900 06 and modded to death)

It depends on what you want out of a bike.
Gen 1 is probably one of the best all rounders you'll find. Good at everything, comfort, grunt, fuel mileage, touring.

Gen 2 is more fun and as Brooker81 says, not the best distance bike (I had one ;D ) It's 3/4 of an R1 with flat bars.

Basically if you like to go for a thrash more than a tour, Gen 2.
If you like distance with the occasional thrash, Gen 1.

Both can be modded to do the others job, and I've ridden an awesome Gen1 (brookers old bike) which went like the clappers!

My own Gen2 was modded almost to the max (apart from a reflash) and it was ballistic and incredible fun. Tank range was Appauling though! And pillion comfort, yep if she is 5' tall and 8 stone :P

Good luck in choosing, they're both awesome bikes.

Like the others above have said

For hammering around your local roads/town and only rare longer distance tours pick a Gen2
For riding 1000's of miles off into the distance pick a Gen 1

Also
a gen1 would suit taller people better
and Gen2 would suit shorter people better  ;)

Am 5ft 8" and I found my Gen1 seat was a little to high and my gen2 seat was the perfect height..
(think this is due to the width of the seat/fuel tank being more narrow on a gen2)

I have a Gen 1 and it's got R1 forks (thanks Mike) R6 shock (thanks Luke) and has been Ivanised (thanks again Mike) I use it mainly for commuting and and it'll do a ton all day long and mine returns high 40's MPG. I can't fault it. We'll I suppose the weight is an issue when I pushing it about and the height was a bit of an issue before the forks were changed, still a bit to high but I'm used to it. Simply brilliant. I've not ridden a Gen 2 so can't compare.

I had my gen1 for 6 years before getting a gen2 in June this year. I luckily got a good 40 mile test ride on the gen2 because I was buying it of a neighbours friend. I would recommend a decent test ride before buying a gen2 because of what all the posters before me have said., the two bikes are chalk and cheese. If I could afford it I would have one of each, gen1 for touring and two up and gen2 for fun.

Easiest way to put it:

Gen 1: Sports TOURING
Gen 2: SPORTS touring

Depends what you want it for!

I love my gen 1 does everything I want of it and heaps more, mines got the R6 shock upgrade and I have to say it's like owning a different bike after its fitted, as for a gen 2 have ridden a few and it's more of hour max type of bike unlike the gen 1 which I can ride all day as for the others saying the gen 1 is heavy.....I find it pretty light bike compared to my last bike, but there again I am 6ft 2 and 18st.... :lol so I find it like a 600, its down to what u want the bike for.....

Just to fly a gen ii flag, I commute 50 mile round trip everyday on mine, about 45-60mins with no problems and am touring into Europe on it this weekend :)

I personally wanted to keep the sportier edge and love the styling with no problems in comfort at around 5 11 tall.

I think JoeRocks summary above is perfect in a nutshell :)

The Gen two,s seat is no bench seat like the gen1 , i have made a pad that levels up the seat and gives a bigger arse, bum contact area,,much much better.
