long rolling project 98 fzs 600
« on: 22 July 2014, 07:32:10 pm »

Saw an old fzs 600 on facebook going cheap had a few issues but i went for it, handed over 600 sterling and even got a spare engine!

first things first adress known issues.

Brake caliper broken bleed nipple.
front fairing damage.
wrong colour tank
tatty in places.

good bits:
spare engine
fairings not wrecked
40,000 miles
near new chain + sprocket
few months tax + mot
seller even delivered it.

first task, stick old engine on ebay to make funds, sold for £50 quick sale.

task 2... brake caliper...

these are known to be shit and sieze up pretty quick so i got them off and took a look..

siezed wasn't the word for it!

complete rebuild was in order, was no real issue with the bleed nipple as they have 2 nipples on the rear and i will be looking for a fzr thou caliper anyway.

urghh

brakes now all done and fully working.. for now!

next task! fairing + tank!

£40 lighter the tanks gone to be resprayed
front fairing off and ready to be fixed

after many hours of trying to fix the ugly bloody thing i got there.. not perfect still needs sanding to a smooth finish then spraying..

next task is to adress the riding position maybe, got some renthals i wanted to try out but after loads of pondering i decided against the idea as they're just too wide.

3 weeks on:

tank has arrived!!!!!
no stickers but the ones id ordered where way too small and then i lost them so i will maybe put them on at a later date.

all fitted and ready to ride.
been sat for weeks and tank was bone dry, new fuel in tank turned the key twice to prime the pump and hit the starter button, instantly fired up and idled with no problems.

om nom nom

total cost of fixes above: £45
fuel £5
profit from spare engine £50
total cost: £0

To Do List:
new exhaust as this one is eww
hid headlights maybe?
respray rear plastic above tail light as its faded like mad.
repaint engine.
tank stickers.
radiator cover
new levers all round.
fazer thou rear caliper
general tidy up.

Maybe more tarting up.

Update:

rear plastic resprayed looks tons better, took rack off for now...

new bits arrived!

rear pillion pegs from a 2000 fazer, 45mm longer and 10mm further forwards...

gf is about 5ft 10 so its pretty cramped on the back, big improvement but not quite there yet, need atleast 20mm-30mm extra seat padding or a longer drop on pegs, the 2000+ seat has an extra 16mm of padding but its not really worth the cost for so little.

update:

fed up with wank headlights so took the cover off the dip beam light... fucktons of difference!!

Nice to see it in good hands, like a rescue dog.

I do have one peice of advice ------  "gf is about 5ft 10 so its pretty cramped on the back"---------- leave her at home on the sofa
I don't do rain or threat there of. dry rider only with no shame.

A solution for lower and more forward pegs was posted a while ago.  I keep meaning to do it, I bought the metal bar in Feb but it's still sitting in the garage!

Fazer 1000 caliper fitment today... spent the morning trying to find the fucking split pin that went walk abouts, turns out it had stuck to a magnet on some scissors :D

anywhoo....
"just a bit of filing they said" .. half hour later it was finaly enough to fit the caliper

2 m10 washers to center the caliper as advised on here...

also..

You done a great job there Paul; but why did you send the tank off for paint? your paint job on engine and fairings are more than reasonable IMHO and so why not do the tank whilst at it?

Also I'm loving the look of that rear calliper, how does it compare to the standard rear brake? I'm finding my rear brake a bit spongy personally, garage tells me its normal for these bikes but I feel I have to really push the lever a good inch or 2 to hold the bike in place on a hill or when braking. Any links to a fitting guide you used and where you got it would be very much appreciated.

scorpion titanium oval.. and i need to get a dbkiller its too loud!
at around 7k rpm cruising its fine but twist the throttle or race up to speed its near deafening.

I purchased it off a guy on here, theyre few and far between but apparently the fjr caliper fits aswell as trx, this is the fazer thou caliper, the breaking is massively improved but not amazing, i think braided hoses would help.

fitting: http://www.beginnerbiker.com/2014/06/fitted-fazer-1000-blue-spot-rear-brake-calipers/

Needs 1 m10 washer between the caliper and the mount to bring the caliper inline with the disc.

Yea braided hoses will probably be a near future purchase of mine once I feel confident enough to fit them
