Can I borrow some carb balancing gauges?
« on: 16 June 2014, 12:36:55 pm »
Anyone near(ish) Luton or Hemel Hempstead willing to let me borrow (take away or use at your gaff) some gauges to balance my carbs?

I've had my bike 2 years now and this has been on the list of things to do for a long time.  I was planning to get some gauges myself, but an ever increasing price of repairing my Camaro means I've not got the spare cash to do so until next year (if I'm lucky)

I'd just like to say I don't have a set but I need to balance mine too and I'm in your area, give me a heads up if you borrow a set as I'd like to come do mine at the same Time!

I would offer... but I'm not in the same area... yet...

I'm planning to move to Hertfordshire area (close-ish to Luton) as of early to mid next month. So if you've had no luck by then, I should be able to assist :)

No, I work in Hemel.  I can travel a bit further from there, but needs be to be 20mins or less, so I can get there and back in a lunch break.

I've used carbtune several times in past, I believe normal gauges are the same, just different readout

If I want to balance mine as well, does this then turn into a LoFo meet?  :b

(am 20ish minutes from Luton)

happy to contribute in any way possible, maybe use my cameras to do a video of how to balance carbs (bike specific)??

I've also got a pair of CarbTune gauges. Based in East London, work near London Bridge. However Midden's currently borrowing them... Shall have to see if he's finished with them. :)

BTW, there's a good video of balancing a Fazer 600 linked to on the CarbTune website.

No, but Punkstig will have a chance to work them out before I get there  :D

If it's the gauge type, rather then Carbtune, I think you need to calibrate each gauge to a single cylinder first. Then hook them all up and tune 2-3, 1-2, 3-4 ??

Ref setting all gauges to calibrate the same vacuum, I have the 4 round gauge type and used a 4 into 1 connector from a fish tank air pump and connected all the gauges together on the 4 and fed the single pipe to no' 1 take off and adjusted them to read the same vacuum reading. you can buy them from pet stores, they push together to form a strip.
 Hope this explains it.

Ok guys, I've met up with the delightful Farjo and am now in possession of his carbtune set, when are we doing this- Saturday? And where?
I would invite you all round mine but someone will probably fall in the cut!
Also, do you have the long no. 2 Phillips screwdriver that is apparently necessary to do this?

When I did mine, I borrowed a carbtune, thought all was going well but then got a bit suspicious about their accuracy, so I would expand on what Savvy has said and what ever type they are check them first by commoning the channels together and running them off 1 cylinder

As I said on the other post  :  check your tool before using it  :lol

Saturday is good for me, but only if you can come to my place in Luton. My wife is on call, and if she had to go out I will be in charge of the kids,  so can't travel anywhere.

They'll be space on the drive and a well stocked tool kit, including a 25cm No2 screwdriver.

Let me know if you're OK with this and I can PM my address and phone number.

It's a lot of noise - engines running and revving every 5 seconds, so on a driveway outside a house with kids in a suburban area is maybe not ideal?

Adam it was delightful to meet you too :kiss If you check the accuracy of the gauges then that'll be a fair swap :thumbup

ps now that you have a set you should create a new thread in Events to et a date  :smash (or I could move this one if you prefer?)
