It stands for penalty charge notice and I have just seen the photos and as Unfazed and kosmic said I have driven through the wider centre bit,  no bollards or arrow but a sign that I can't make out from the pictures but white parallel lines on the road.  Think I've got tohold my hands up.  Will see if I can post a pic up when I'm on the laptop.

PCN stand for Penalty Charge Notice.

London Local Authorities and Transport for London Act 2003
38JL Failing to comply with a sign indicating that vehicular traffic must pass to the specified side of the sign.

If there was no bollard or blue sign with the arrow to indicate which side to go you have a case to argue it.

If the companies already paid it though its a pain.

Just checked the photo again and there was bollards there. Photos not clear enough to see any arrows but think I'm bang to rights on this one. :\  Going to question why it has taken them so long to issue the PCN but think I'm focced tbh. The real frustration about this is that last night I came out the office and disturbed and challenged a group of 5 men trying to steal one of our company vans, took a photo of their car and put myself right in the firing line and guess what, NO camera has been accessed to trace these 5 car thieves but there am I going through a wide bit. :wall

And now for the good news :D     My company have just called me to say that down to my efforts last night in preventing the theft of their van, they are going to pay the PCN for me. Happy days. 8)

Personally I'd challenge the pcn stating that you're using their own photos as your evidence that no signage is visible in these lighting conditions to state which side to travel through!

Naa. I'd settle for being branded a hero and letting the company pay it as a reward.

Most obvious thing is that the hatchings are surrounded by a solid white line so no excuse really Punkstig I'd have thought.

Just got to take the lack of observation on the chin and use the experience to good effect in the future.

I have to agree with that Locksmith. I don't know what made me go through there really as I don't usually and am very aware that there are cameras watching our every move in London. Must have let my guard down. Still, won't do it again and it's not coming out my wages now so, who gives a foc. :lol

These sorts of lanes are new to me - can I ask what the purpose of them is?

What the real purpose? To prey on your natural reaction to take the wider and safer route to prevent scraping your vehicle on the ridiculously tight gap that they want you to go through and setting up a camera to capture you doing this thus raising revenue for the said local authority. :b

I gathered that much Dazza ;)

What's the reason the council use for installing these sorts of roads though (the official stance) as it seems nothing but plain bonkers to me

The official stance is "Traffic Calming" to slow down the cars etc using the route.

Nope, just to restrict large business vehicles going through residential areas, not for speed!
As for the hatch lines I wasn't examining those when looking at the picture, just trying to make out the signage, as the outer lines are solid you wouldn't be allowed through, so yeah, take it on the chin.

But as you've said the company's covered it then happy days!

They are also there to stop vehicles that are wider than 6'-6" entering an area or using the road as a cut through.
