About an hour ago I walked across this very junction, no traffic lights, no traffic rules and thankfully lorries are banned in Hanoi. A keen sense of spatial awareness and showing consideration for others is the secret of using the city roads here, plus pedestrians and cyclists always have right of way over engine power. It works.

You CANNOT tell me that accidents don't happen right there where there is no coordination at all?
People manage to walk into each other at the best of times, but that's just chaos where vehicles are concerned!

I didn't say that accidents don't happen here, they do. But this is a very crowded city, lights at this junction would cause gridlock for sure. Needs must is the rule, people cope because they have to.

Ordinary tarmac. It's smooth because all the electrical cables and other services are above ground, and the drainage mostly under the pavement and buildings so they never have to dig up the roads. Occasionally they dig up a bit of pavement to get at a sewer buts that's all the works you'll see.

No not all red lights and to do it safely you need to know the lights - this will be from being there every single day at the same time of day.

I don't condone jumping red lights at all. If you think it's Ok for cyclists to do it then presumbly you'd also welcome bikers and car drivers jumping them too.

If you think you must jump a red light to feel safer then may I suggest that you give up cycling as you're a danger to others and yourself.

There are plenty of car drivers who run red lights , there will allways be a minority of assholes who spoil it for the majority, and no amount of training or laws will change that , there are plenty of  assholes out there who think that laws and rules and good manners are for other people .
Although sooner or later if you will run a red light your luck will run out , natural selection methinks .

This bloke has become my number1 Foccin hero.  It  grips my turd balls seeing adults riding on pavements deserted or not let alone using the mobile while doing so.

As for traffic lights you don't want to wait then dismount and walk across. Cyclists have as much duty as any other road user to abide by traffic laws and follow the highway code.

With cyclists the reverse is true. It's the majority of arseholes spoiling it for the minority.  :\

Bollocks. Most cyclists I see are sensible and responsible, but you don't notice them so much because they don't interefere with your progress.

The only country in the world where you don't need to do lifesavers. Watch the peoples heads, they are well aware of other traffic, they don't need to look. It's great fun riding in Hanoi traffic.

Not bollocks. Most cyclists I see aren't sensible or responsible. They're either schoolkids with no road sense or people going to work before dawn with no lights or helmets, jumping on and off kerbs, ignoring traffic lights/signs. When I do see a cyclist riding responsibly, believe me, I notice.

Not really, no.  You don't need a license to cycle, so obeying traffic laws is optional as you cannot be banned.

You do what is safest and gets you about the quickest.

I mean that first bit at the traffic lights.  Who wouldn't!  Stop at the lights and you are just getting in everybody elses way and putting yourself at risk.

The wrong way down one way streets, yup a bit stupid, but guess who's gonna get hurt.

Good old daily mail.

You can't get banned but you can certainly get fined if you were to cause an accident through careless riding.

I could get fined, I suppose, for careless walking.  What's your point?

You were saying that obeying traffic laws is optional, but according to the highway code it's not.

So the dozens of cyclists wisely jumping the red light in the silly video.
Well go on, show us the law, the implications and perhaps you can point to prosecutions.
