Chipshops and dripping
« on: 10 April 2014, 12:07:57 am »
So chip shops in the south just can't get it right half the time the batter ain't worth bothering with and the chips are rather sickly
To me a proper fish and chips  fish with a full coating of crispy batter and chips cooked in dripping.
Last time I experience such a delight was in Yarm.

So to the Northerners amongst us

Do the good old fashioned fish n chippies  still exist up North?   cooked in dripping and especially kept away from that ridiculous polystyrene trays/boxes

The Black Country Living Museum.  Best. Chippy. Ever.

And yes it's worth the £16 to get in and the £7 for cod & chips for the grub alone, never mind the rest of the stuff there.  :D

Most chippies  in Cambridge are rubbish too.  The beach chip shop at Waterbeach off the A10 Cambridge to Ely road is decent tho.
Ride for today coz you never know what tomorrow holds.

I've worked all over the UK (including Yarm) and would say that chippies in the North West are the best of any. Not many would be cooking in dripping these days though - well none that I know of. I love me chips :-D

Doesn't Harry Ramsdens fry in dripping?  Nearest one to me is Blackpool, I think at one time they had a few scattered about.

There's a chippy called 'Seniors' just outside Blackpool which has been winning quite big awards for the last 25+ years.
Buggerdifino what they cook em in, but they're pretty unbeatable!
Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!

Midden, I'm pretty sure that the chippy in Whitstable does dripping.  The chips certainly have a nice coating of something solidified when they go cold  :)

Come along on the Easter egg run on Sunday and I'll take you there.

Good thread Midden, bikes and food you cant beat it!

A bit off thread here but gonna attempt a home made parmo tonight, lads i knew from Hartlepool & Stockton & Burgh used to always harp on about them.

On the chippy front...you know a good chippy when the chips are as tasty as the fish & not just a bulking agent.

I've heard lots about this Parmo, a friend moved back to Middlesborough and goes on about them loads.  Apparently the post drinking kebab of the North, I must try one.  I wonder if they can beat the deep fried double cheese burger with salt and sauce that I used to get when working up in Edinburgh, now that was food of the gods!  Burger, cheese, burger dipped in batter and deep fried, stuck in a bun with chips.... ooooooo hungry now......
