Just been informed by the garage that i need replacement front forks. It only went in for a service, anyway how much can i expect to pay for second hand forks (if i can find some)? thanks in advance

I was thinking exactly the same, seems a bit drastic unless they've had a knock or are  pitted.

I third what Kozmic and Dazza have said, at worst you have pitted tubes and or the bushes and seals need replacing.

Its could be entirely possible that the shop in question is talking bollox, so can you tell us what exactly the shop said and can you post some full shots of the top and bottoms of the forks.
