On the way into work today, the Peugeot was nearly taken out by a dozy git in a BMW on the A14. As I was overtaking him and the lorry in front of him, the silly bugger pulled out on me without indicating or looking while I was alongside! I swerved to avoid, and blasted him on the horn, whereupon, he swerved back into his own lane, looking rather sheepish, it must be said.

Granted he should have checked more, but with yours being a small (and not exactly fast) car I'm going to assume you were more than likely in his blind spot... just need to always be aware of what other people may or may not be able to see to avoid being in a situation where you do have to take action. Having the moral high-ground is irrelevant

Seeing a BMW behind the lorry and if I were thinking of overtaking then I would be fully expecting the BMW to also overtake and me not being in a BMW would of not been in such an impatient hurry and I would of waited my turn.
But thats just me, car or bike - same

It's becoming more common for arseholes behind to block the safe and considered overtake. Idicate check mirrors give time to faster cars on outer lane to see indicators and adjust speed or get clear.  All good then about to pull out and the arse behind jumps out and blocks.
Not that I'm calling you an arse Christo.

yeh I see it too. what is happening is that I and the one behind are waiting for the car already in the outer lane to go by before we move out, but the chap behind me has a clear path first, and he as you say blocks my way out, he clearly knows that I would also be wanting to overtake,

I was traveling a good 5 to 10 mph faster than him, keeping a steady distance from the car in front. The Beemer was tail gating the lorry, and pulled out as I was bang alongside - looking out of the passenger window, I saw his face as he pulled out on me. But our wing mirrors were level when he pulled out.

I think that nowadays and based upon my trip (car) from Nottingham to Exeter just yesterday , many drivers just indicate and pull out to overtake all in one motion, mirrors and shoulder checks prior to a manoeuvre do not seem to be used as often as they used to be  I know that I have to be 100% focused on what drivers around me are doing, especially on motorways and dual carriageways and anticipate them being plonkers so you are not surprised when they meet your expectations, has kept me safe for 25 years on the road as a rep doing thousands of miles each year......touch wood it continues that way, if you have a close call just roll your eyes and carry on

As another that uses that road daily, I see it all the time too.  In that situation I wouldn't have swerved and risked being jammed into the armco, I'd have kept my line and let him realise I was there when our mirrors touched.

But, I'd be in either two and a half tonnes of Range Rover or a company Astra van.   In one case I'd have come off better no matter what and in the other I wouldn't give a shit......

There'll be plenty more moves like that to come in future mate.....not your fault....that's what happened to me last year on the bike, had nowhere to go & locked up before saying hello to mr tarmac.


Folk tailgate lorries so they can neither see if the road ahead is clear........or if there is an obstruction ahead.....plus the lorry driver can't see them.....really focs me off....car or bike i've had enough if it & i often overtake,  get myself in behind the lorry if possible & if theres not enough room to take the lorry too....then i back off to make a gap until i can see clear down the road......i can pop out for a leisurely look, pop back in if required & overtake nice & easy.




Do you reckon he did see you overtake & that let him know the road was clear so he just pulled out....or do you think he didn t see you???, hard to tell with these type of foccers!

Yeah it's almost as bad as the arses who on first blink of indicator are already pulling in to your lane as if indicator is auto right to move across

When there's a bike in the boot, I do 40mph tops!! 

Otherwise, I stick to the speed limit, and if you're behind me when there's slower traffic in the inside lane - tough shit, wait until there's a safe gap for me to pull in and let you past.

theres just too much distraction in the car ( phones, sat nav etc) and too much traffic outside( impatience)...net result is shite driving.

on the bike I do my very best never to follow any car traffic,I overtake swiftly or hang back...... I hate mways and filtering....Anything which involves relying on a cage for my safety always gives me the shudders.

I also will not drive small cars...4 wheel coffins IMO....

I wonder if you had a camera fitted the insurance would of gone the other way AND the other driver would hopfully be done for due care at least

I'm mostly the same, especially when I'm riding solo. Keep way back and then gun it to get past to spend the least amount of time on the wrong carriageway. Unfortunately, this usually requires a longer distance and for there to be a decent sized gap in front of the vehicle(s) you are trying to overtake. Thankfully, I'm patient and I'm rarely trying to actually get anywhere when out on the bike.

As for motorways - I find them to be the easiest type of road to drive on. I find 99.9% of traffic is predictable (or predictably unpredictable ) and I've only ever had one case otherwise where the traffic went from 70 to a stand still in a very short distance without any warning in all 4 lanes on the M25. Still, I had plenty of braking distance and magically no one smashed in to one another...
