anyone know much about contract law?

B-i-l supplies a fixed term service to the local council who financially penalise him if the exact terms of the contract are broken and if HE wants to terminate the contract early the council will charge him a pro rata fee for non compliance with the terms of the contract.
Now the council wants to end the contract 2.5 years early because they need to save money, or so the consultants they have employed say!
He realises that if he contests the decision he will probably be blacklisted but as he thinks he'll retire when the contracts expire is it worth stirri.g up the shit?

Depends on what the actual contract says.  There is obviously an early termination clause but does it give them the right to cancel at any time without penalty while he can cancel at any time and be penalised or does it apply equally to both parties?

For my sins I work in public contracting. As rusty says there must be a clause to allow what they are doing. Normally I would expect that they would need to give notice. If he wants I can have a quick look at the contract for him. Paul
