Paypal Bastards!
« on: 15 December 2013, 02:28:10 pm »
Hi Guys,

A word of festive warning...

I ordered some stuff online last Sunday, which totalled £177 including the £8 I paid for 48 hour delivery. My stiff has still not arrived and I just called the merchant to see what the problem is. They told me that Paypal have not released the funds and emailed them to say that they should NOT send the stuff until they have full payment, which will be the 18th.

Now I paid at the time of order and the full amount came out my account on the 11th, so Paypal have decided to keep my money for 10 without my consent. There is also a good chance my stuff will arrive late for Christmas despite it being ordered with 17 days to spare.

Just a warning for all you last minute shoppers.

Not quite sure what to do with my early mid-life crisis. Ideas on a post card to P.O.BOX 150...

I bought some stuff off a friendly Foccer on here and he never received his money after  a week. Pay Pal are just plain useless in my opinion.

I only use it to buy stuff on Ebay

paypal is there to protect the seller and buyer and if your funds were held its because there was something that the built in security programme has picked up ie amount that you do not normally you spend on papyal, a different ip address you ordered from a break/interuption in the online connection while ordering,  or even a new bank account your history as a buyer etc etc are all taken into account.
how paypal works is that they pay the seller instantly and reclaim the money from you via bank or cc or paypal balance and if the security system picks up something odd then it freezes the payment until paypal receives the money from you (making sure its you that has paid n not a hacker), which is always via BACS which takes 5 to 7 working days. once this happens an email is sent to the seller to release the goods. paypal DO NOT tell the seller not to send they recommend not to,  if your paypal account had been hacked and it wasnt you buying then they have protected your funds as the payment has not gone through and they have protected the seller as they have not sent the goods, it doesnt happen often and is still statistically the safest way to pay online.

BACS is a 3 day clearing system and an old one at that. If you are buying of a trusted seller use Faster Payments via your online banking. Its sent/received away and free. If PayPal are still using BACS they need to sort themselves out.

Was the holdup due to unusual spending patterns I wonder.

While Keith's post is, generally a fine example of why you should not believe everything you read on the interweb, I suspect his 3 days is reference to when PayPal collects money from your current account via direct debit, which is still a 3 day cycle (albeit without any loss of interest). Why anyone would allow PayPal to do this however, is beyond me - it's slow, its opening avenues for fraud, and I think PayPal charge you for the privilege? If you make a payment to your PayPal account, from your current account (initiating the transfer from your current account) it is indeed done through the Faster Payments system, as required by regulation 70 of Payment Service Regulations. PayPal don't have any say in that.

they do not charge for the dd/bacs set up or taking of payments however paypal can only take payments from you via the dd system (as every other person cant ie gas electris fone etc) unless you innitiate the payment from you own bank using fps , the jist i was saying is that paypal had a reason to hold the payment and dont just do it to piss you off its to protect the seller and buyer depending on the reasons in a complex security programme
the dd or bacs is slow and shit lol but thats why generally paypal pay immeditelty then get the funds from you slowly and that is why the security system is there to halt everything if it dont look right

What about good old bank transfer. Is this safe?
I buy stuff off someone, they give me Bank details, Branch,Sort code and Account number and then I go into a Bank and deposit funds straight into Account?
Just curious about how safe this is for the Account holder?

Very safe and very permanent. Buyer transfers money to the sellers account, seller sends out  goods, simple. Yet if the second part doesn't happen the buyer has no redress but by using credit card or Paypal the buyer suddenly has back up and some guarantee of atleast getting money back.

I personally think Paypal would be bigger Bastards to ignore suspicions

safe  and secure for major companies but doesnt give you the protection as a buyer if the goods are shit or not what you expect from a dubious seller
paypal is safe it just has rigorous security programmes to protect everyone and 90% of the time everything goes through as normal

Was the holdup due to unusual spending patterns I wonder.

no spending patterns of the buyer could be not usual to the account ie if he only uses paypal for say 10 to 20 quid purchases and all of a sudden he has spent 177

As you say, an amazing resource for travellers. They need to set it out a bit better though, unless you bookmark a certain page it sometimes takes an age to find it again.
www.Rideasia.net  is an example of how it should be done.
