What performance mods have people done?
« on: 27 November 2013, 10:26:17 am »
Hi guys. After my old '98 fzs600 was stolen a couple of years ago i switched to a Triumph Sprint ST 1050, and it was an awesome bike but circumstances have conspired against me (i.e. I had a crash and wrote my bike off) and i'm considering getting another fazer. However, i'm planning on making this one a bit different.

Project fzs is my working title and so far i'm planning the following upgrades as time and money allows;

Gilles rearsets to raise the height of the footpegs
Swap the wheels (and swingarm if neccessary) to allow wider section tyres to be fitted
Upgrade the suspension although i'm thinking rebuild rather than new units
Bigger Carbs/tuning of current carbs to give a bit more poke
Changing the gearing (Probably just the sprockets) to give more acceleration

Just wondering if anybody has done any of these mods themselves so they can advise me on what does or does not work so i can minimise my trial and error time.

I'm not trying to turn the fazer into a sportsbike or anything but i've been on trackdays on my old one and the two big areas that i identified as wanting to improve where the lean angles acheivable and the acceleration driving out of corners so if i could improve these areas and still retain the overall go anywhere do anything character of the bike then that is my aim.

Thanks for your time and i look forward to hearing your suggestions.

Currently doing a custom job on mine. Got an EXUP 1000 swing arm in at the moment, however still sorting the (KTM Super Duke 990) rear wheel fitment. So if you follow my build thread then you'll know if ultimately this works. It does look promising though. Here's the link: http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,10613.msg113344.html#msg113344

Interested to hear of other peoples mods.

Thundercat front end including wheel for 120/60 tyre, fazer thou rear shock, k&n filter, stubby scorpion can, handles much better now, performance improvement is negligible!

Yeah, but when you take those "sails" off next spring, that'll be a performance mod!

I've done a few mods to mine mainly aimed at helping with motogymkhana:

Gearing - Lowered to mean its revving higher at lower speeds making in easier to control and prevent knocking the throttle off completely.  I use the Fazer for commuting as well and the gearing hasn't hindered in any way.
Rearsets - To help with foot position and ground clearance but I haven't fitted them yet.
HandleBars - Tried motorcross bars and Renthals but have switched back to standard bars.
Seat - Still trying to get this the way I want it.
Brakes - FZS1000 rear caliper to give more control and feel. Braided hoses and DOT5.1 all round.
Crash Bars - To protect when the inevitable happens.

Other mods (which were on the bike when I got it) include
GiviWing rack, Double bubble screen, heated grips, fender extender, hugger.

I've done loads to mine over the years but the most worthwhile mods in terms of perfromance were to the suspension; similar set-up to Wezdavo, wilbers springs & cartridge emulators for the forks and R6 shock at the back. Got newer fr calipers (silver spots) and SBS sintered pads whilst the rear is standard with SBS ceramics and braided hoses all round. Haven't bothered with the engine much, K&N filter and iridium plugs but these are hardly worth mentioning. Planning t o take it to PDQ at some point for a basic check & tune. Otherwise good tyres (PR3s) and good maintenance is priority.

I have had my oem shock rebuilt but virtually any replacement with adjustability on the market would be better. My previous Wilbers ecoline and R6 shocks were much better. Likewise, the emulators and fork springs have transformed the front end, though I'm sure a thundercat front end like Punkstig's would be great also.

Thanks for all the tips

Has anybody got any experience of replacing the carbs or having them rejetted?

Got a fair idea of what sort of chassis upgrades i'm going for i'd still like a little extra acceleration other than lower gearing, although i'm fairly certain i will be lowering it anyway.

What about underseat exhausts? does anybody know of any options like that for the fzs? i really like the fz6 exhausts. Seen a scorpion that moved the end can up higher but not seen any underseat option anywhere.

On the FZS1000 "Ivanising" is the way to go but I don't believe they do a kit for the 600 as the yanks didn't get it, it makes a far better job on the thou than dynojet ever would, not so much in top end power but sheer useability. My Ivanised thou will pull smoothly from 20mph to flat out in top gear without getting emotional on me, no chance as standard.....(more fun to thrash through the gears though)
