HELP! Bike won't start (FIXED NOW THANKS)

Today let gf start bike under observation. But I forgot to use choke. Bike had been laid up for a fortnight.  She started but then stuttered.  Added throttle and choke but the bike died. Now despite being left for a good half hour she won't start.

Tried normal choke. No choke with no throttle,  no choke full throttle.  She coughs once but won't pick up. Left the battery charging and will try her again tomorrow morning.

I hope I've just flooded it but any advice or other suggestions welcome.

Women!  How's your battery? You could take the plugs out and clean them and charge the battery if you want but give it a push it'll probably start.

If the battery is low or old then leaving it idle in cold weather may have just been the final straw.
As the Dude says, you could always try bumping it, but if you're charging the battery my guess is it'll probably start okay next time.
You need to speak to Red98 about your girlfriends stutter.

3 and a half hours on charge while I went into town on the bus (I feel so dirty ) and she started first time.

No clicks from the fuel pump, the carbs were probably still overflowing.

Battery has always been fine, but this is the coldest and longest between starts I've ever had since I got the bike in April.

Best theory, I flooded the bike, then in my continued attempts to start her I drained the battery too low to be of use.

All being well the bike will be fine unless I screw up again.

Thanks all for your help and advice, but for the sake of my relationship with the gf I will NOT be showing her your comments lol

I did try a bump start before i posted here, used to do it on my CG225 all the time, but the road outside isn't steep enough to get enough speed, steep enough to be a pain to push the bike back up though

I find that if mine has been parked up for a week or so once the fuel pump stops with full choke it almost starts before I touch the button.

yep....iam good with stutters....send her down for the weekend and i`ll see what i can do  ....classic symptoms of flooding and low battery....she`ll be fine now,suggest you get out and use it more,the bike not your girlfriend

Yep same here (so far) its like the bikes saying COME ON THEN !!!!!
But I did have one episode where it was the spark plugs that were in need of replace and I too drained the battery trying to start it, ever since then I keep the bike on a yamaha charger which is actualy made by ctek and the battery has been good so far

I've been having trouble starting mine recently with the damp and cold. I ride it to work every day and it usually starts with full choke and a touch of throttle but not always and have flooded the engine a couple of times trying.


Is there a knack to starting these things?

I had an issue with stubon starting last year and it turned out to be the sparkplugs, I had already brought an air filter to ruel that out but once the sparks were in all was fine and I never bothered with the air filter and have only just  got around to fitting it. heres that http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,6412.msg112918.html#msg112918

I had new plugs and air filter fitted a couple of months ago. Battery seems ok.

After experimentation with starting my bike in the recent cold and wet weather, my Fazer likes full choke to start and no throttle whatsoever. About 3-5 seconds after it starts, the revs die down so much (around 1k or just under) that it sounds in danger of stalling -- but it doesn't. It was at this point I was previously giving it a bit of throttle but this floods the engine making it stall and difficult to start again for about 30 minutes. So I resist the throttle and after a few more seconds the revs pick up to 2-3k and I can start reducing the choke.


Added this in case any other noobie like me has the same problems starting a cold, soggy Fazer.

What brand of air filter did you use?
It looks a bit ill fitting!
After all the discussions we've had about them on this forum it still amazes me when people don't replace their air filter with a K&N, for performance and economic sense?

And if your bike had an air filter in there for 15 years that was the replaceable type, then i'm not surprised you had dodgy plugs as well.

Never saw any of that info.
What do you see that looks ill fitting, the new one was an origional yamaha one from local yam shop and was exactly the same as the one I took out.

I stand corrected then, it looked like the outer edges weren't sealed properly.
The reason i mentioned it was because i had one in my bike that flapped about a bit, a HiFlo one, and it also felt like it was restricting the air which made me change it after only a few months as it just never felt right.
The K&N i replaced it with was a really good fit, almost vacuum like, and the difference in breathing was brilliant, you could really feel it through the throttle.

[/quote]Thats what I do too -maybe 2 - 3rds 5k and then back straight off  I am not convinced about the K&N

I had an identical non-starting issue on the weekend after the bike was sitting for 2 months    outside under a cover, the engine was turning over fine and lights were bright but no ignition.  I had horrible visions of fixing clogged carbs/checking sparks etc. in the dark by the side of the road but I bought an Oxford charger to give the battery a boost.  Started at the first press the next day...never again will I underestimate the importance of having a fully charged battery!

Don;t know about "supposed to be" but that's how mine is
