600 any probs
« on: 15 November 2013, 10:47:12 am »
Hi all, going to look at / buy a 1999 600 tomorrow, is there anything I should look out for on this model that causes any major issues?
All the best Dave.

Front sprocket nut- do a search on here and all will be explained, other than that it's pretty much faultless!

Off the top of my head, if the downpipes are black then check for rust.
On start up listen for cam chain rattle, it can be a few hundred quid to put right, although it can still rattle when the bike's oil is cold then it disappears once warm if it's already been done, so you need to ask the question.
If it's a dealer then get them to make sure the front sprocket nut has been upgraded to the 12mm width rather than the old 9mm one as it has caused issues with quite a few bikes.

Agreed

Id seriously check that sprocket nut, make sure it hasnt been welded on.should also be original one still on unless changed to the new modifiedversion.

A bike with 4k miles would fetch more without even trying, should really have the original black exhaust downpipes with such low mileage, also foot peg rubbers should have no wear on them.

Sounds fishy but you never know, could be deal of the year.

1) When you come to see it, check if the engine is cold. If it's not, that means the seller warmed it to have a good start from it. Better ask the seller to leave the bike cold.
2) Check the compression.
3) Check the rubber intakes between carbs and cylinders. There may me cracks.
4) Ask him to have ride. :) Try shifting the gear, see how the bike goes. If the bike twitches, that's a problem. :) If you experience collapses in acceleration, that's also a problem.
5) Check the electrics: lights, alarm (when all the light are flashing).
6) See if the speedometer and tahometer work properly.
7) You can also take the spark plugs out and see their condition.
8) See the front work - there might be oil leakage.
9) When the engine is warm, spit on the down pipes - from 1-st to 4-th. If saliva stays there, then touch the downpipe - it might be cold. :) If it's cold, then cylinder doesn't work.
10) That's all, I guess... :)

At that price my main concern would be a hidden write-off, ringer etc. A VIC check would be a definite.

Dave whatever you do, dont go by yourself as no doubt the mother will be a PITA when you're trying to look at the bike, take your girlfriend as a decoy totalk to the mother about stuff whilst giving you all the free time in the world to check the bike over, get a few pics up & let folk on here decide on general lookof things.

Could be he just wants a hassle free sale since he's abroad, i wouldnt expect a friend of someone to stitch you up but then again who knows these days.

Good luck then, sounds like you could be on to a good thing.  :)
You may have issues with stale fuel and a flat battery if it's been sitting around for quite a while, so just bear that in mind, but they're quite easy to bump start.  ;)

Think about the front headlamp mod - unmodified, it is crap.  Plenty of info on here about it.  It's a great bike. Enjoy!!  :lol

:'( :'( :'(  If I had any luck atall it would be bad. Went to look at bike at which point woman says she has made a mistake and bike has done 40000 not 4000 miles new I was screwed. She  then says local bike shop says she is selling too cheap after she has been in there to get a battery,I guess she told them 4000 as well. The bike is scruffy badly corroded fork sliders, corroded fork stanchions and chain, no battery, no mot ,no tax needs a service, stood on tyres for 2years, told her £800 was ample, she thinks it's worth more. You win hardly any and lose loads. Suicidal, despairing lol.
Cheers Dave

Hey Dave...take a long look outside mate......it's foccin raining!!!!!!....no good time ti be riding bikes anyways!!!

& you came to the right place......keep looking & learning & being a wannabe foccer & soon enough a nice bike with good history will just pop up outta the blue.....& better still if someone on here sells it then you can check out the history or generally whether it was owned by someone who gives a foc.

Lets face it by coming on here you already know more about the fazer than some fazer owners themselves so count yur blessings & your money thats still in yur wallet & get cracking on.

Plenty fish in the sea & the sea smells  :faz Y :)

At 40000 if it hasn't been looked after properly then there'll be quite a few things to sort out, so £800 is about right.
The mileage itself is of no concern at all.
