GPZ500 would be a safe bet. Pick them up for next to nowt.

Or a GS500, they're simple as, and nothing to go wrong. I had one a few years ago, they're immense fun!

The GPZ and the GS are both good suggestions, but there is a huge problem.

The 33bhp restrictor.

Not many insurers want to touch a restricted rider. When I was looking at a Fazer 400, insurance for me cost £500. Add a restrictor, and the price rocketed to £1,500.

The VT250 may be a stopgap - assuming I get a job, that is...

Nick - I'm tempted to get a project bike, and wait till July to insure and ride it. Depends on a) funds, b) whether I'll have room to do it, and c) how deperate I get!!

Loads of people don't ride thro the winter months, so a project you can be tinkering around with is probably a good idea. Plenty of helpful folks on here to guide you if you get stuck. Could be a good cheap way to do it if you buy the right bike (i.e. frame and engine ok etc). But seriously, what's to stop you keeping what you've got left of yours and make that your project? Gotta be cheaper than selling it and then starting again?

Ive been so tempted to flog my bike recently, probably just winter blues....plus theres just something niggling me because I know it is a bit dodgy looking & i really cant be focced spending any more money on it.you almost had yourself a noggyfighter Cristo but i think i probably should get another season outta it to justify all my spending..


Youll have to be the project type of person to do a rebuild...im really not, it was through necessity & all i want is a nice bike to ride but you seemed to enjoy the whole trailer thing so maybe this is the way forward.

Christo why is the premium going up so much when you are telling them your bike is restricted?? My GS which I had for a year restricted was about £270 or something TPFT and my Fazer was no different if I had it restricted or not, I may have not mentioned it to the insurer I can't remember because I was literally only restricted for about 4 weeks on it. Seems really strange that it's going up £1000 though when you're only adding some metal discs...

I think it's the companies. When searching for unrestricted, I get 20 offers on GoCompare. When restricted, that drops to five. Remember also, I now have a claim stacked against me (which has gone 100% my fault).

Im guessing that companies see a restrictor as a general indicator of higher risk, bit of a shame really coz the restrictors supposed to lower the risk...sad state of affairs really.

It's a shame you can't find an old Suzuki X7. 250cc about 27 bhp and an easy 100mph. I could keep with my mates on there bigger bikes(mostly)and so much fun

A 2 stroke - with the mileage I do?!? Sounds expensive in pistons etc. Plus, not overly keen on the whole naked scene. Even on the Fazer, I get battered by the wind due to my physical size. Naked will just be painful.

Do an unrestricted quote and find the cheapest insurers then go to their websites directly. It may be that they don't support the restriction through their aggregator channels - I work in this industry (albeit travel insurance) and the politics of it all is insane. For specialist products (insurance on a restricted bike isn't standard) its often best to go outside of the comparison sites.
