Kawasaki ER5 / 6 (the 5 will be in your price range, not sure the 6 will be, but the 6f does have a fairing). The other option, if you can find one, is the old Kwak ZR7 (which should fit the bill nicely in terms of price, ins, and there's a half-faired version).

Had a go on a friend's ER5, hated the sound, hated the handling. Not for me. That Kwak is nice though.  :)

It wasn't a VW, but a WW (Walter Winterhoff). And I'm keeping it.  ;)

Anyone want to buy a towbar?

A car!!!
....f..kin skateboard!! :lol

With my test passed in September last - insurance on an MGB-GT - £2,500. And I refuse to drive anything that doesn't have character (requires a toolkit  ;) ).

Apart from Mum's Panda. I don't get a say in that.  :b

I was going to suggest the GPZ 500, I had a Suzuki GS 500 and yeah for tall people they are small but not awful, for some reason my Fazer is actually more uncomfortable for my legs even though my knees didn't even fit in the tank indents on my GS!  :eek

If you can afford an SV, then I would highly reccomend them. The first thing you notice as soon as you sit on it is its feather weight. Handling is very good, engine is easy to use and by no means boring. It doesn't obviously have the outright power of the Fazer but around town the torque is there. Motorways its comfortable enough, but needs a downshift to overtake where my Fazer will take off in 6th no worries. Decent enough for tall riders.

Option 3 would be the bandit 600. In all honesty, I had a go on my mates recently and it wasn't as poor as I expected. When we go out for rides he's miles back but I think he just doesn't ride it right. First thing is first, you will probably prefer the engine to the SV as its more like the Fazer just not as good. Sounds nice with a good can though and its pretty smooth. Handles okay, his felt a bit stiff and the ride was quite firm but it had good character and did fit me better than my Fazer. Worth a punt definitely, this is from a fellow bandit slater... Desperate times and all that

It don't look great but you'll be able to handle the power. Also, you will be ok to look behind without worry when poppin the engine :-)

Dunno what sort of mofo batteries that thing is packing, but must be something special seeing as they've deemed it necessary to equip it with wheelie bars!  :eek :)

I'm the only biker in the family, and the only one with a bike license. Hell, I'm the only one who even LIKES bikes! My Dad never even rode 125s! And Mum had a Yamaha 100cc which never came off L plates for 1 year at uni. So yeah...  :rolleyes

I picked up that trailer for £75, and I doubt it's worth much more than that. Plus, that's the only roadworthy thing I have at the moment, and call me sentimental, but I'd rather have that than peanuts for it.  :rolleyes

I have a plan b if all else fails: a friend is selling a CB750 in parts as a project bike. If I go back to France, I'll buy it, do it up, and sell it. Hell, I might do that as well!

Thanks for the input Yamazer. I'll remember that, especially as I've seen SV650 33bhp kits on the Eebs too.  :)

Exup - I call dibs on fitting a 600cc engine to that!  :lol

On a final note: I do want to get back on the road, but I haven't been back on a bike since the big smash up. And while there's nothing I'd like more than to hop on a bike, I'm pretty apprehensive. I've not been able to ride out the angst, or even work it out by fixing up the bike, so I have 2 months of beating myself up, and endless internal replays of what happened sitting in my belly. Last time I put on the blue leather jacket I was wearing on the day (about 3 weeks ago), I felt physically unable to wear it. I suspect a minor panic attack (or summat). And to boot, I still have the insurance thing hanging over me. I still don't know what's happening on that front. Lots of shit. Lots of things to work out.

What ever bike u choose to get chris please just TAKE IT EEEZY!!!  You have had more incidents in 1 year of biking than I've had in 25. Something has to change fella. YOUR ATTITUDE ME THINKS.

If you're still restricted Christo I'd definitely +1 on the SV. They are a bit slower than the Fazer but restricted it'll be about the same top speed, and will probably accelerate a bit quicker - it's got shorter gearing ratios and also more low down punt than the Fazer does, and that low down isn't changed by the restriction.
I sure as hell wouldn't have one myself now I'm not restricted as I miss the top end rush you get on IL4s (particularly bigger ones which is why I'm wanting another big bore sports bike), but they do handle well and engine wise will be fine for you!

Lots of good suggestions on here, Divvys, CB500s, SVs, Bandits etc would all fit the bill nicely. Talking from personal experience, I had a black 01' GPZ500 and it was surprisingly rapid, and it took well to the 33bhp restriction. Looked decent in that colour too and was cheap to run.

Had a Honda Bros 400, nice little bike, and insurance was dirt cheap. Might be a little small for you physically but could be a cheap but nice stop gap option?

The honda bros is a fantastic little bike but soooo uncomfortable fer my size and therefore christo's aswell. Same for super 4 and cb1. I reckon the sv would tick all the boxes. Cheap to buy and run with a little low down poke and possibly cheaper to insure havin only 2 cylinder. (Not sure on that last point tho)

sorry to but in
i dont know your history with bikes but

dont look at third party insurance fully comp is much cheaper than third party in my experience

over the last eight years ive got my insurance down to under £60

not coz im a good carefull rider
i have 3 points on my licence  it seems permanently for speeding lol

but coz i ring insurance companies after i do the compare bit and haggle

my best quote this year was £43 with some never before heard of comp so used that to get my quote down

then protected my no claims got another £6 off
couldnt work that out but its all good for me

hope you get sorted soon
good luck ;)
