my dad had a 98 fzs when they first came out then got the fz6 in 04, he likes his fz6 and on ride outs with the 2 bikes theres little between the 2 bikes really.

I hope its sharp enough to read :)
if you double click on it and go into photo bucket and then hit the zoom cross at bottom right twice it is perfectly readable.

cheers bill, interesting read.

Interesting that they say that the fz6 is down on power in top 2 gears at passing a car type speed.
well if the power is all at 10k rpm and you're behind a car...isnt it silly to be passing it in 5th or 6th gear where you've got no power, bang it down to 3rd or 4th and rocket passed that car, whole point in having a gearbox isnt it, i mean whether an fzs and an fz6 are both behind that car and the fz6 is in 3rd gear and the fzs is in 4th is a irrelevant as they are different bikes.
even on my fzs i reckon im usually in 3rd or 4th to overtake and so what if you're sitting at high revs while you wait for the point to overtake & i think this is the thing..everyone seems to want to always be low revving as if they are saving the engine when in fact the engines love to be revved up, although for lazy riding i agree that it is helpfull to be able to overtake in any gear without banging down the box and i think that seems to be why so many love the big FZS 1000......coz they is old and lazy :b

zoom cross?

the little magnifying glass with a cross inside it, to zoom in, hit it twice when you are in photobucket, it is bottom right of the pic.

I've always liked the look of the FZ6, but preferred the clocks and the reviews of the engine on the FZS are better too. Hybrid time?

For the FZ6 chaps - what's the underseat storage like? What handling mods do you do? What do you do to the FZ6 (performance wise) apart from fitting a PowerCommander?

I've had both over the years and ridden a few more that belonged to dealers, I would say neither is the better bike, they are just different. From nearly 20 years of running dealer ride outs, trips abroad, open days etc I've found the biggest influence on how a bike goes, feels etc is the rider, there are very few bad bikes any more.
I've just returned to the foccer fold after buying a bike to do track days and moto gymkhana, I looked at both FZS and FZ6 and only chose the FZ6 over the older model because a minter came up at the right price. If I'd found a really good FZS first I'd have  bought that first.

Anyone care to comment on how much of an improvement the S2 FZ6 is over the first FZ6? Is it superficial or did Yamaha actually make a worthwhile difference?

Cheers,
Rob

Minimal! I've got an alarm, standard toolkit and Power Commander in there and there is *just* room for a spare headlamp bulb too :(

S2 is an improvement, doesn't seem to have the fuelling hesitation of the earlier model and the front brakes are definitely better. The new seat, not convinced, I know the old one was a bit hard but once you were used to it it was comfortable over distance.  Don't know about the S2 fairing though, never ridden an S2 Fazer. Differences not a massive improvement but the S2 is a better bike in my humble opinion.

I only use my 2004 FZ6 for commuting on (also have a Repsol Blade for fun & "touring"!) but IMHO the FZ6 is fantastic for commuting. I think it looks modern even tho is 9 yrs old and whilst the older Fazer 600 may have a better engine it looks very dated now (well the older style anyway not so much the newer ones with the Fazer1000 style fairing). I've never had any real issues with the fuel injection being snatchy - guess I must ride round it - and for power if I need it I knock it down a gear or two - back to the days of riding a 125  :lol
