NEC Show Discounts?? How & When?
« on: 24 October 2013, 07:37:52 am »
Hiya fellas,

Being going for a fair few years and going again this year. Trouble is all I hear about from other bikers over the years is "got this for £100 when it was marked up as £200" and other variations for boots, jackets, trousers, gloves etc.

I've managed to pick up bugger all cheap in the way of gear - managed to pick up mirrors, etc cheap, but they've been priced about right.

How the hell do people get these discounts? Is it typically on the last day (going Tuesday, can't stand the weekends). Are there certain manufacturers who typically sell at discount & are willing to haggle down? Orrrrr, is there a sneaky, stoaty, cunning approach plan?

Any advice as always much appreciated.

Cheers

I've never been to this show, but from my experience of the NEC classic car show I can say most traders do deals at the end of the last day.
It's usually because they can't be arsed with the hassle of packing all their stuff up at the end of the day. The best bargains I've had are with heavy stuff like hydraulic presses and bottle jacks.

I got a nice TCX Frank Thomas Jacket from the George White stall one year. The RRP was £250 and it was on show price for £160. I spent about 20-30 minutes with the guy, asking daft questions and trying to get the price down. All the while other "potential" customers came and went. In the end I said to the guy "I am going to buy this for £80 from you, so we can do that now or I can stand here and chase off customers all day!" The guy laughed, and said "blooody jocks". I got it for £90.

Going back a few years got chatting to another "punter" while looking at some soft luggage from Oxford, turns out he was checking all retailers were charging the same, no chance of deal then.

It's knowing what the gear you are after actually sells for normally, and I don't mean RRP, that's the secret of getting a bargain.
