The end is nigh
« on: 26 September 2013, 09:36:31 pm »
I'm afraid I've got bad news, I've put a deposit down on a new bike and am using the Fazer for PX.

I'll still come on here though, I enjoy the banter and I might need to keep my eye on the for sale section...

Not really bad news I'm just preparing for the worst. I'm gettin a SV650, fancied a change, took a test ride and liked it. Don't mind if it's not my thing when I have to live with it, I'll just move on and maybe get another Fazer.

My dad has an SV 650 mk1 naked curvy model with carbs. I have ridden it quite a lot and on some long rides too so have quite a decent knowledge of what it's like. It is a good laugh and very different to the fazer, but in my opinion certainly not better. His has been very reliable though, can be a bugger to start but he doesn't ride it as often as he used to now. The engine is great around town and it feels noticeably lighter but get on any decent straight and the Fazer will dominate it all day long. I much prefer the handling on my fazer too it feels more planted, but maybe I would just need to get used to his more or didn't get on with the Avon tyres he was using. For a change from the fazer you won't be disappointed, it would be my 2nd choice in this "budget middleweight" group for sure and is a right laugh on shorter journeys where it does well. He was fine on his all over wales too, although it did have a tendency to eat oil if he wasn't careful so look out for that on yours. His is naked and has had some work done by the previous owner so looks amazing I think, I hope you enjoy yours.

Had an SV650, naked, early model. Good little bike, nice V-twin engine, and handles decently enough. BUT; not enough oomph for longer trips and especially motorway use. Bench hard seat quickly becomes apparent after not too many miles. In heavy rain, the front cylinder plug and cap is very exposed - had mine go on to 1 cyl on M6 in heavy downpour; 45-50mph, couldn't see a foccin thing in all the spray, first time I'd had to douse electrics with WD40 to get home since my learner bikes 30-odd years ago. Not very funny  :\
You're definitely going downmarket coming from a Fazer. I understand the desire to try something different, but I could never go back to an SV while there are Fazers, 600 or thou. And I think now there are many more better bikes you could choose from. If money was a real issue, ok maybe as a stop gap until you can get something better. Just my thoughts, maybe it helps, ignore it if it doesn't  :)

Actually, most write-ups praise it as a great little bike for newbies and more experienced alike. They are fun, just not enough.

I think I'm goin to miss the Fazer's inline 4 but I've been wondering for a while if there's any substance to all the fuss about V engines. If I don't get on it's no bother, I'll just get a bandit >:D

It is a nice engine (the only V twin I've ever owned), but I suspect you need something a bit bigger to really get the best out of the V configuration. Bandit?!! :eek  I know swearing is accepted on this forum, but really sir, you take it too far... :lol

Oh hang on, I had a scooter and a CB100 that cut out all the time so I guess I can give the bandit a miss and still have scary stories for the campfire.

You owned a stinker then Crisp?

SV is fair play and all jokes aside (my dad loves it when I tell him it's for ladies  :lol )  its a great bike that you won't be disappointed with. But please, I urge you never to get a blandit. My mate has had 2, first one was actually not too bad the slightly newer revised version that came out in the early 2000s and has a little bikini fairing. Nothing on my fazer though for torque, handling, or horsepower. Comfort was good. He sold it for an old and awful gsxr 750 that was a dog, regretted it straight away and swapped it for an older mk1 bandit that is just a huge piece of crap. It's very heavy for a 600, slow (SV will keep up and it's a good 25hp down on the fazer) and handles like crap. Oh, and he just had to replace the whole engine because of a transmission issue. I have been lucky enough not to own a stinker, even my restricted gs500 and chinese supermoto were great in my eyes but going from a fazer to a bandit would just be sacrilege. SV I recommend though, maybe test ride one first though to see?

I put the deposit down on the strength of the test ride and picked it up earlier. I've only had chance to go around the block but I'm looking forward to having a proper run out on it in morning, hopefully that'll last.

Well if the bandit's a bad bike maybe I'll get a maxi scooter instead...
