Me and Mr P2N are buying a house! Anyhow, been having a poke about today and me being me, I checked our the central heating while he checked out the cupboards etc 

So, whilst poking about I spotted this - I know whats happening with most of it, but the bulbous thing (circled blue) got me. Anyone know what it is?

not seen one of those before? if it doesn't go anywhere is it to collect any crap in the system?

not a plumber so this is a wild guess is it a pressure bulb to prevent hammer action ?
pipes rattling and banging ?

No !!!


Its a job to see if it is tee'd into the heating pipe or goes up behind it.
It is not big enough for an expansion vessel.Could be a seperator to give expansion and cold fill without short circulating.

Looks like an expansion vessel, but it's way too small. also seems too big for a valve.

Hard to judge from that angle and you could do with a decent camera... there are some available with more than a 100,000 pixels these days.


If that pipe coming out of the top goes to the expansion tank in the loft (arching over the top with the end not submerged), then it may be a device to help separate air/gas from the liquid.

I tend to agree. I could agree more or less if I actually knew what was what lol


Anyhow, the lot has to go. We want a combi fitted asap. I'm just trying to work out what is there first so I know what I'll need to do when we get the keys and move in. At the moment I have limited info - a couple of photo's, so it's a lot of guess work.

It's an air separator and that pipework is shite    similar here

see if a magnet will stick to it, if it does its a pretty good indication that the system is shitted up. If you are fitting a combi it will be cut out anyway but, make sure you have the system well flushed and fit a system filter.
