AHHHH my bolts are made from cheese
« on: 28 December 2011, 11:09:01 am »

All was going well with my R6 shock mod until i started to tighten up the bolts on the shock. I started to tighten up the lower shock bolt and then it happened  :eek the nut started to get loose again. I was not putting much pressure on the nut honest guv, just getting it ready for the torque wrench. I thought i would carry on and tighten up the rest of them and come back to the lower shock bolt later. I was tightening up the relay arm to frame nut when it happened again :eek :eek :o :o .  So would anyone have any spare lower shock and a relay arm bolts? And any easy way to get a rung nut of?

I know i must have been a bit heavy handed but i have been tinkering with cars and bikes for years and this has never happened before. Is there anything special about the suspension bolts?

Hi, this should'nt happen in the real world, but are you using 1/2 in drive stuff, I only ever use 3/8 sockets and ratchets, because of the lower torque settings for most motorcycle bolts. and always hex sockets so you don't round off the corners. I've had my shock linkage off several times and not had this problem, maybe someone overtightened them before you got it. most Jap m/c bolts are fine thread, these being 10mm x 1.25 I think, but stand corrected, no doubt the God of the Fazer (sorry Mike, how are you BTW?) would tell us. Replacements are cheap, but probably unobtainable until next week, which is no help, maybe the local hardware shop has some similar, just so long as they are high grade steel. hope this is of some help. Pete..

Socket head screws (Allen screws) used to all be High Tensile at one time, (would think they still are) if I needed those bolts, that's what I would use. A good tool shop should stock them, or you could probably find them on the internet somewhere. Good luck with it.

I had a look around the internet without much luck, i also emailed about a dozen breakers who all said they dump them or sell them with the linkage.
Anyone know the part numbers and ill order them from Yamaha direct.

There is not to many engineering firms around here to get one of the shelf.
