A quiet helmet is down to a number of factors.
1. A good, snug fit all round.
2. The rider's relationship to the wind stream, which in turn is affected by:
3. Screen height and shape.
& 4. Riding position in relation to the screen and air flow.
5. More vents & spoilers generally = more noise.
6. Good seal around visor.
7. Well designed aerodynamics.
I solved the problem of noise and buffeting by replacing my lid with a different one. The problem is, I had no idea that this would be so effective until actually out on the bike with it on. But it was a very nice fit when I tried it on for the first time. It is an HJC RPHA10. But this doesn't mean the same helmet will work for you. The HJC IS-17 turned out to be crap in comparison, even though that also felt like a nice fit - until I tried the RPHA. Funny thing is, the RPHA has a number of spoilers, but these don't seem to generate any noise. Conclusion: helmets are an annoyingly subjective thing
Awaits "I tried an RPHA on your advice and it's the noisiest helmet I've ever used!"
