You need a bleed nipple at the highest point.
The rear caliper has two highest points so needs two bleed nipples. It is impossible to bleed the caliper properly with only one nipple.

Thanks guys
I'm certain it's not related to the brake.
Sprocket is perfectly straight as far as I can tell.
I'm puzzled about why the knocking is only there when the chain is off.
What are the usual signs of worn bearings? I can't detect any play moving the wheel side to side.
I'm due for a new rear tyre soonish so I think I'll wait til the wheel's off and check everything out properly.

Have you got Yamaha Fazer 600 (1998 - 1999) Service Manual?

Chapter 8 has some detailed electrical troubleshooting instructions

FZS600 Fazer / Are my wheel bearings knackered? (video)
« on: 02 September 2013, 08:04:38 pm »
So I thought I'd knackered my chain (see this thread http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,9648.0.html )
But I was advised to pop the chain off and see if it was the chain or the wheel bearings.
I've posted two videos - one with the chain off and one with the chain on.

Chain off:
Wheel spinning - no chain

I'm guessing it's not supposed to make that knocking noise?

Chain on:
Wheel spinning - with chain

It doesn't spin nearly as long as it did a few weeks ago, which makes me suspect the chain.
And the chain does sound really noisy. But I had a good feel of it and there were no tight links. I'm not sure what a new chain feels like so I can't tell if the whole chain is stiffer than it should be.
Also in this video you can hear a high pitched squeal from the wheel when it's turning slowly.
The bike's still riding fine and the weird noises at the rear have almost gone away.

Any thoughts appreciated.

#1 It helps if you change early from 1st to 2nd, ie. no higher than 4k rpm
#2 What's the problem? I change from 6th to 1st without releasing the clutch in between.

Thanks Dead Eye that's the kind of advice I'm looking for.
So basically I need to take the wheel out, mudguard off, calipers off, loosen top & bottom yoke , then take each shock out?
How do people support the front end while the wheel's off?

Obviously everybody has a different preference for earplugs but these are the best ones I've found
Howard Leight Max , 20 pairs for £2.50 from Amazon
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0026IR2SM/ref=pe_385721_37986871_TE_item

FYI here's a better deal for 4 plug caps (from the same seller) £9.82 incl postage

I also got new plugs, this was the best deal I could find for 4x CR8E £17.20 incl postage

FZS600 Fazer / Fork Dust Seals
« on: 31 August 2013, 01:20:35 pm »
My fork seals are fine but the dust seals are cracking and rusting and falling apart.
I've had the new seals for a while but haven't gotten around to fitting them.
Any tips? Haynes doesn't really cover this.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: New chain
« on: 31 August 2013, 12:17:30 am »
The chain hasn't needed tensioning in the 10k miles I've had it but it got noticeably looser after this fiasco so I tensioned it on Wednesday.
What's the easiest way to unhook the chain? When I was tensioning the chain I got the impression I couldn't just push the wheel forward in the swingarm to loosen the chain.
Since tensioning, I've noticed a quiet constant squeal from the rear wheel bearings when I rotate the wheel by hand. But only when it's warm. So you might be right. Is that a bad sign? What would be the indication of an over-tightened chain?
Pretty sure it's not brake related.

Not the front sprocket nut, I've checked.
Darrsi what pistons, rear brake? Not those either.
Pretty sure it's the chain. The noises correlate perfectly with my neglect of it.
It's the original chain & sprockets and they've done 19k miles.
What's the verdict on joining the new chain. Do I need a riveter or can I do it with a hammer?

64
Good idea I might get some of those too.
The bike has started idling really unevenly since I balanced my carbs!
I suspect the caps/leads or the plugs.
I'd lend you my carbtune but I'm in Nottingham.

FZS600 Fazer / New chain
« on: 30 August 2013, 10:45:19 pm »
I've been a muppet and knackered my chain. Went to Holland last Thursday and forgot to take chain lube. Thought it would be ok anyway (usually I lube every 200-250 miles) but getting towards 1000 miles it started making some pretty horrendous noises. Not just clunking but intermittently screeching like there's a stone jammed in there or something.
So I've lubed it heaps since I got back and it has improved a lot but still sounds crap at low speed, clunking and occasionally squealing.
I can't see any tight links and the links don't seem too stiff but the rear wheel doesn't spin as freely as it did.
So I've ordered a Loobman manual luber. Probably should have done it a while ago, since I ride through winter.
Regarding a new chain - M&P on Ebay have standard DID + sprockets for £80 or gold for £87.
Does that sound reasonable? Is the gold chain actually any better or does it just look prettier at first?

Using brass nuts on stainless studs is common in heavy industry for that reason. Usually a bit bigger though (eg. M50)

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Exhaust Holes
« on: 12 August 2013, 10:22:45 pm »
The original exhaust always gets a hole in that spot.
I wouldn't bother trying to fix it, the whole collector is made of cheese.
Just replace it with a stainless Motad Venom one. £150 + postage

You would think that the tape should at least be on the left side of each lamp as you are looking at it?
Not sure what's going on there, that's why i sounded a bit clueless earlier?  :look (it was nothing to do with the fact that i am clueless  :crazy )
As far as I can tell the tape does nothing at all!
So what do you do if you take your bike to Europe, can you get beam benders for bikes?

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Bike failed its MOT!
« on: 06 August 2013, 11:41:44 pm »
@elbrownos, what's the tape for?
It's a German import so the lights apparently point the wrong way.
Last MOT the tester put the tape there so it would pass.
Dunno if there's a proper solution - the tape does pretty well! Its been there 10 months and not fallen off yet..

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Bike failed its MOT!

Mine's a German import and last MOT the tester put tape on for me.
I don't know how you're supposed to do it yourself without a beam tester to show you where to put it.
Your tester sounds like a knob.
