Too much salt on the roads for my liking. 40 hilly miles on the push bike as well for me.

as the bike has sat in the garage unridden for the last 6 weeks. Above freezing temperatures and sunshine promised for Saturday. A trip to the Penny Garth Cafe at Hawes looks to be on the cards. I'll be wearing ALL my gear to stave of the chill.

I've got tinted black on my silver Fazer. Looks classy. Normal screen, not double bubble on mine.

I got mine easily up to 900 mph by painting 0s on the end of all the numbers on the speedo. Really works.

Looked on Wemoto at replacement pistons and seals. They quote a large and small piston and seal kit. Do I need both? Is one for one side of the calipers and one for the other? I assume I'd need a set for each calipers?

They get stuck from inside the caliper rather than just the exposed parts you can see.

Did you use red rubber grease when you cleaned them?
Also, only ever use proper brake cleaning spray on the pistons, there are plenty of other degreaser sprays that can leave a residue and cause problems like sticking.

You've 2 options, they either need stripping down and cleaning with a new set of seals, fluid, etc, or do what i did and buy a fully functioning 2nd hand pair off Flebay.
The reason i did that was to save time and effort, and it only worked out around £10 dearer.
I'm on call for work at weekends so needed the bike in working order.

Saying that, i've just had a look at the prices at the moment and they're a bit more expensive now.
I only paid about £70 for the pair!

Or buy a pair off here for £1000........bargain.  :b

I cleaned them up using proper disc brake cleaner but didn't grease the pistons before reassembling. Do the put the red rubber grease on the piston body?

FZS600 Fazer / Front brakes sticking
« on: 24 February 2013, 08:19:27 am »
Happened about 5 weeks ago so I took off calipers and took out pads and cleaned up the pistons thoroughly. Put it back together and they seemed ok. Bike not been ridden since and they are sticking on again. I can free them up a bit by wheeling the bike in the garage. Original hoses. Fluids done about 16k ago. Pads in good nick.

Other suggestions?

Started the bike and let it run for 10 mins just to see if it still started after 5 weeks of inactivity! Discovered that the fronts brakes are sticking on, again, despite giving the pistons a thorough cleaning up after it's last venture out.

Had to make room in the garage for a 900 RRV Fireblade I've just acquired....by chance....while tyre kicking round a local dealer this week :)  Gets delivered next week (my summer bike).

I went across last year with my dad. Two motorbikes and a 2 berth cabin. I think he rang them to make the booking rather than over the Internet. More expensive than Dover but when you live in Huddersfield, it's a bit of a hack down the motorways to get there. We came back via Calais/Dover.

After virtually 2 years of little exercise, I dusted down and overhauled the push bike yesterday and  did 40 arduous , hilly miles on it today. Gone are the days when I wouldn't think twice of 60 - 80 mile club rides at pace. The road bike is set up on the turbo in the bedroom gathering dust. I WILL start to do 3 sessions a week on it instead of idling my evenings surfing the net. Promise. Honest.

« on: 11 January 2013, 09:32:22 pm »
The Pilot Road 3 is definitely the way to go with good grip wet and dry and the longest lasting tyre I have ever used.
From experience it is a better better tyre overall than the Pilot Road 2 and lasts much longer.
I think the Metezler M5 is a slightly better tyre for grip wet and dry but would not last as long

How does the mileage compare between PR2s ans PR3s? I considered the 3s but didn't think I 'd get much more mileage than the 2s.

I'm onto my third  set of Pilot Road 2s and would thoroughly recommend. Excellent wet and dry grip. I get 7000 out of a rear but I do give them a bit of hammer.

If you type exup valve into YouTube There are loads of videos on how they work, should be serviced etc. I was looking recently in relation to a Thunderace.

At the very least, I try to rinse off the worst with cold water. Then spray FS365 over the metal bits to help neutralise the salt and corrosion. Then every other week give it a more thorough clean. I'll always spray the brakes with disc brake cleaner after I've rinsed it. However, I only use the bike once a week for pleasure and I doubt I could be arsed to do my cleaning routine if I was using it daily in winter.

The mechanic has been round and fitted the new proper link that I got. Watched him fit it. No problems. He was very apologetic. Now, new tyres to be fitted Saturday and scrubbing in this weekend. I think the thermals will be needed.

I'd say your written english is first class VNA. Not sure about the way you use it though ;)

What really pisses me off is Uni students and graduates. Can't spell to save there/their/they're lives! Apparently spelling/grammar isn't taught at school anymore, although it's making a comeback.

The teaching of spelling and grammar was made compulsory upon the introduction of the National curriculum in 1988. The previous government overhauled things with the introduction of the New Primary Curriculum a few  years ago, with, again, there being emphasis on spelling and grammar being taught. Finally, the present government have introduced a grammar testing element to this year SATS tests for year 6 children. We await their wise rulings on what exactly they want us to teach regarding literacy skills as they have jettisoned the New Primary Curriculum introduced by New Labour. Rearrange the following to make a well-known phrase: brewery up  couldn't piss arrange a in a -

Unfortunately, English is an incredibly difficult language to master proficiently given its complexities, exceptions and anomalies. Is it any wonder the kids struggle? Most adults struggle to write and punctuate to the standard expected of a child of 11. How many of you punctuate your sentences with :  or ; ? Is it that beneficial to teach spellings with the prefix circum- (circumnavigate, circumference)? Perhaps if you wish to become a round-the-world yachts person? Teaching lists of spellings is great for kids with great rote learning abilities, but not a lot of good to many children, especially if not taught in context.

Teaching Standard English is very difficult when a significant minority of children spend all but their time at school speaking in non-standard, slang or colloquialisms ("It were nuff good when me and frank was playing on us xboxes last night."). One perseveres to maintain the beauty of our language. Long Live the Apostrophe!

It was a soft split link which I've since discovered today are not recommended for over 500 cc bikes. I'm going to get the mechanic to come to me and fit a proper split link.

Found the problem: The plate and the fixing washer that the secured the link that fastened the chain together has come off. The link was half way off. Christ knows what damage it would have done If it had come off whilst riding. Brand new chain as well. I'll be taking it back to the garage that fitted it for them to sort. The sprockets, washer and nut seems ok and I can't see any damage as a consequence.

« on: 24 November 2012, 09:22:54 pm »
I don't know how people get the mileages they do out of tyres. I have gone through two sets of Pilot Road 2s on my Fazer and get just over 7k out of a set with the rear down to the wear indicators. When I spoke the local tyre fitting place, he reckoned that was good mileage. I was going to try some Conti motions at £140 a pair but he reckoned I'd not get any where the same mileage out of them.

New front and rear sprockets along with new chain. Modified sprocket nut on. Took some slack up in the drive chain last week but the bike ran fine without knocking for a 200 mile ride. I'll double check the wheel alignment but I took care when I tightened chain.

No knocking with the clutch in or when not running power through drive chain. I had the front sprocket done recently and had new chain and sprockets. I'll have a look again but I only checked the nut last weekend and it was fine. Tyres look fine although the rear is due for a change. I'll have a look at the swing arm. Cam chain is rattling a bit but not too bad.

FZS600 Fazer / Loud engine knocking - big end?
« on: 24 November 2012, 02:06:47 pm »
Had to abort my ride today. The bike developed a loud knocking sound coming from the bottom end of the engine. When I stopped and revved it in neutral, no knocking. But when riding the knocking is regular and increase with speed. I can also feel the knocking. I'm not at all mechanically savvy, but have a feeling this might be terminal. Any advice?

« on: 10 November 2012, 11:59:02 am »
Rubber glue failed miserably today. Taken them off again and cleaned all the crap off everything. The problem is that the grips are very loose on the throttle body. I am thinking of wrapping the throttle body in sticky parcel tape stuff and then super gluing the grips over that. Any better suggestions?
