General / GoPro helmet fixings
« on: 12 February 2014, 04:27:00 pm »
Hi

i want to add some GoPro sticky pads to my Airoh S4 helmet which i use for off roading. i want to add one on the side and one directly on the top.

But the curved pads supplied with the GoPro arent quite the right curve? am i missing something here?

due to the curve of the sticky pad being a tiny bit steeper than the curve on the helmet, it means that the whole surface of the sticky pad doesnt come into contact with the helmet.

any ideas?

General / Patio laying
« on: 01 November 2013, 03:47:43 pm »
Hi guys

Ive half layed the 2nd patio in my garden (its a three tiered steep garden). i layed half of it using 600X600 Ryton Riven slabs on a strong wet bed (full bed, not spots)

I then hurt my back and couldn't lay any more. Then i hurt my ankle...so couldn't carry on with it.  :rolleyes   the last 2 weeks have been wet and just as it was starting to dry up....its rained again!

My problem: well its getting colder, cant be that far off frosts now. I want to lay the rest when the ground has dried out, but mortar doesnt really like frost does it??? ive done bits of repair work in winter before and always covered the work with blankets / plastic sheeting to protect the the mortar from the frost.

I know you can get additives for the mortar & the whole UK building trade doesn't stop for winter. So is it a case of using these additives in the mortar and covering the patio up once laid or are there other tricks that i'm missing???

Thanks

General / FJR's
« on: 30 September 2013, 10:00:31 am »
Hi

i adore my Fazer and have spent a fair amount of money and time looking after her. But...it doesn't quite do what i want. :( The problem is im 6'4" and my Mrs is 5'10", the fazer is just that tiny bit too small. Ive had the bike 6 years and tried different bars + built up seat but i can never seem to find the right siting position?? (up right, leant down e.t.c)

I'm a fan of Yamaha as i think they're well built, reliable and value for money (as i don't have a lot of a cash!).

SO....what do people think of FJR's (new and old)? in a bike i always look for simplicity and running costs, again it goes back to the fact that i'm not flush with cash. i need to be able to maintain the bike my self without breaking the bank.

I know i could go on the FJR site but i will get a bit of a biased opinion.

Thanks

Hi

Im going to be staying on the west side on the Yorkshire moors soon. I was planning on zigzagging my way towards the moors, touching up on some nice roads then heading back using a different route.

Any stand out roads? or towns?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / MRA touring screen
« on: 13 September 2013, 05:20:46 pm »
Hi

For a long time now i've had the yamaha touring screen on my Thou (it came with the bike). im a tiny bit under 6' 4" and find the screen ok...ish

Im looking at switching to the MRA touring screen (£100!). im running Renthal 758's but with small risers (around 20mm)

Im hoping the bars wont foul the screen on full lock. I'm just trying to weigh up if its worth spending £100 on a screen!?!?!.....what do you reckon?

General / inside garage roof
« on: 27 August 2013, 07:08:55 pm »
Hi

i want to insulate my garage roof the same way ive done the back of the door which is by using 1" thicke polystreyne board from wickes.

I will do it by putting batterns along the roof joyce, then sliding the poly board along on top of them. It will mean that the poly board will be about an inch away from the ply (to create an air gap)

I wont do this between every joyce (due to shelves being in the way) but i will do 3/4 of the garage.

Will it make the roof sweat, thus create mold and rot???

In the summer, when you put you hand a few inches from the ply in the picture...it is hot!

General / Damp coarse height
« on: 04 August 2013, 09:28:14 pm »
Hi

I've just ripped up a fairly shoddy/sunken patio and i am about to put a new one down.

As for damp course...the way i remember it is - the important part is 8 inches from the house. In this 8 inches (200mm) the ground level should be 150mm below the damp course. The patio ive just ripped up was around 100mm.

My problem is the level of the new patio is kind of set by the first step of a concerete (with slabbed treads) set of steps thats leads up the garden to the next tier. If i make the new patio lower it could be 150mm below the damp course but that first step will be BIG! if i heigher the patio the first step will be fine but the height to damp course to patio will be even lower!!

I know ways around this is to start the slabs 200mm from the brick line, and lower the 200mm to a suitable height and fill with gravel. But, for aesthetic reasons and practical reason i dont really want to do that....the max i could do is 6inces from the building line (ideally i would do 3.5inches which i would continue all round the whole patio filled with Cotswold stone)

Pretty sure there is no law against this but it can get picked up in a house survey (when selling your house). A bloke i work with is an ex builder and he has done jobs where he's had to go and rectify patios that are too high against the building line.

Did any understand that?  :lol   Ideas on a postcode please as im quite stumped!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / fuel pump
« on: 29 May 2013, 02:14:44 pm »
pleae help  :o

went out 2 start my fazer today after about a 3 week lay up (battery has been charged though).

Turned ingnition and the fuel pump clicked away as normal, hit starter, turned over but didnt catch - this is normal, my fazer doesnt like being started if it has been riden for a week. BUT..when i let go of the starter, the fuel pump clicked away a bit more???

ignition off......back on, fuel pump clicks for 5 secs but kind of sounds like theres a loose connection (the sound isnt "even" if that makes sense)

so i did igntion on...fuel pump clicked for 5 secs...ignition off....back on...clicks for 5 secs....AND SO ON, it just keep clicking away always for 5 secs.

This isnt right is it??? never done it before and i thought the fuel pump just primed the carbs? so why is it doing it for 5 seconds every time the igntion is switched on??

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / rear brake rebuild
« on: 11 April 2013, 06:13:25 pm »
Hi

just to clarify.......the two rear brake pistons should move the same amount as each other??? so every 1mm the one moves...the other moves 1mm at the same time? because mine dont  :rolleyes   (the one moves just about half the distance as the other one)

Caliper
i rebuilt them 4 years ago (14k) but re used the seals. Im thinking of doing it again but with new seals. So theres 2 seals per piston isnt there? i ve just read the other thread on here about seals and the price of OEM ones!!!  :eek   some one said the Nikon ones are good, any one used them on a rear brake?

Master cylinder
im thinking of overalling this as well. Never touched any master cyclinders before, so what will i need to replace? i guess these seals / boots will be stupid money for OEM ones so what are the alternatvies?

General / LED winkers that are also DRL's
« on: 03 April 2013, 08:23:53 pm »
Has any one seen or used these before?

http://digitek-moto.com/products-page/digitek-moto-shop/smart-signals/

there basically LED winkers that are Daytime riding lights when not be used as indicators. The rear ones when not be used as indicators are brake lights and tail lights. I think this is a smart idea, extra lights is hardly a negative thing.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / charging problem
« on: 17 March 2013, 07:13:55 pm »
Hi

started my Gen 1 this morn & popped a multi metre across the battery while i was waiting for her to warm up. the reading was 11.9v for a second, then to 12v (the Fan was on). i then left it a minute or so and tried it again.....11.9v for the first second then sat at 12v.

i then acidentally knocked it in to gear so it stalled due to the side stand being down. So started her up again and put my metre across and it was 12.3v......waited a minute or so again.......tried again and it was 12v  :(

even with the fan on, lights on (as there automatic) that is too low. Any advice on next course of action?

General / heating system (plumbers?)
« on: 06 March 2013, 07:18:17 pm »
Hi

Need some advice

i live in a 2 bedroom terraced house, combi bolier, 3 rads up stairs, 3 down stairs, 8mm micro bore piping.

Needed to take the living rad off as im getting the walls skimmed. I bought new valves for it (thermostate & lock sheild) so thought i will drain down the whole system, fit the new valves, refill with inhibator and bobs your uncle!  :D ......but not quite......... :(

All three down stairs rads have locksheild valves with drain valves (but my new ones dont) and the upstairs dont. So put a hose pipe on the living room one, cranked it open and water pissed out for a bit 4 seconds and that was it???? so i thought the washer may have jammed. So did the same on the hall rad....water pissed out down the hose pipe for abit 2 secs and that was it????? that cant of drained the whole system???  :o

So disconnected the living rad and got about half a bucket of water out of the rad it self. The boiler is displaying zero pressure. Took the shut off cap off the thermostate valve, screwed the stat back on, opened it and closed - no water, did the same with the locksheild valve...no water.

so are the pipes drained but air holding water inside the other rads? and once ive changed the valves and fit the new ones will i have to put inhibitor inside that rad?

answers on a postcard.

Tar  :D

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Service intervals
« on: 22 February 2013, 12:27:43 pm »
Hi

I have a Fazer Thou with just shy of 31K on the clock. ive always looked after my bikes by keeping on top of the servicing. my annual mileage is 5.5 - 7K a year

Swing arm / shock - remove once a year, full clean and regrease
Oil / filter - changed every 3.5 - 4K
brakes - clean, pistions red rubber greased twice a year.
Exup - stripped, copper greased at least twice a year (after it seized the first time & i had to drill it!)

and so on........

BUT...my fazer is no longer my number one bike. Im now only doing 1.5 - 2.5K a year and dont have the time or money to spend keeping my bike mint.

Just got me thinking what other peeps service schedules are? with my new low mileage would you still drop and the oil and filter once a year? my biggest fear is the EXUP seizing again.  :'(

Also...are the checks im supposed to do on the cam chain tensioner, too make sure it moves freely? never done anything to a Cam Chain Tensioner ever  :o

General / New to ebay
« on: 21 February 2013, 07:10:21 pm »
Need some E-bay advice

I put my first 2 items on ebay for sale. They are 2 items of clothing which i stupidly set to start bidding at 99p(why!!) i cant let them sell for under about £12...i was an idiot to strat the bidding at 99p (but it was free to do that  :rolleyes )

So....can some one i know bid on my stuff, and if he wins just not pay me? can he just leave some feed back saying he collected it and payed me rather than using PayPal. ive set payment as PayPal and delivery as 2nd class economy.

i aint got a clue what im doing  :'(

(Heads up - im going to be selling me serviced fazer shock with k-tech spring soon)

General / down to the Lot region, France
« on: 14 February 2013, 01:34:19 pm »
Hi

I'm going on a trail riding trip to the Lot region in France at the end of April. We are catching the Portsmouth Caen ferry. Rough plan is…

Get off Boat at Caen, motorway (yawn) down to Le Mans, towards Angers, then stop the night around Saumur.

Next day – go from Saumur, through Poitiers and then onto Oradour-sur-Glane for a look around. Then head down to the Nontron / Brantome area to spend the night.

Next day – head off towards Sarlat and to our destination which isn’t far east of Sarlat.

I have been to this region once or twice before (in the car) so I know what a lot of the places are like.

What I'm really looking for though is info on campsites…are they open at the end of April?general prace? (or any wild camp spots?)

Any cheap biker friendly B&Bs?

Might stay in the travel lodge at Portsmouth the night before we sail, any one know is its poss to get your bike near the door (I'll only have a disc lock)

Any info really  :D

Cheers guys

General / photo hosting sites
« on: 09 February 2013, 04:13:12 pm »
Hi

As im a member of a few forums, i use photobucket as a photo hosting site. i upload my photos to photobucket then link them to the relivant threads.

Once you have a thread online, if you delete the photo from the hosting site will it disapear from the thread ? (or does the site cache a copy of it?)

What about if you move the photo to a different folder within the hosting site...will it dispaear on the thread as the address may now be different?

Of course having your photos backed up online is never a bad idea but i personally find photobucket a bit....well.....crap.  :rolleyes . its easy to upload, and really easy to link/copy addresses BUT....overall the site is really slow and i cant seem to find a quick and easy way to sort photos into different folders (you seem to have to do it 1 photo at a time...which takes FOREVER!)

Shall i fuck it off and start using a different site???

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / help with new seat
« on: 09 February 2013, 04:01:25 pm »
Hi

ive had my FZS1000 refoamed and recovered. But when its on the bike it doesn't seem to quite fit, the main problem is the gap between the tank and the front of the seat. There also seems to be a gap on the pillion part, at the side.

i dont think this is right, especially the tank gap. can i be cheeky and ask you to have a look at your seats and see how it compares?

Thanks
